摘要:
The zero‐address code output from a computer compiler proves to be useful in producing computer enhanced learning material in mathematics education. The authors adapted a program to produce this code for mathematical expressions. This code is then interpreted in a number of different ways which prove useful to the teacher. In particular, programs are produced capable of evaluating and plotting non‐continuous mathematical functions, and, symbolically differentiating a function in the variablex.

A description of the course is given with an outline of the framework and the assessment arrangements. Sample assessment tasks are provided with the objectives and associated criteria statements that are used for the assessment of the coursework.

摘要:
The problem of reflection of water waves by a nearly vertical wall is studied. A simplified perturbational analysis followed by Havelock's expansion of water wave potential is employed to tackle the problem. Assuming some particular shapes of the nearly vertical wall, first‐order correction to the reflection coefficient is calculated for deep water as well as for uniform finite depth of water.

It is shown that the correlation coefficient p can be applied to measure the degree of linearity of relationships commonly encountered in calculus. As illustrative examples, p is discussed for the power functiony=xnand fory=sinx.In addition, the degrees of linearity of the sine and tangent functions are compared over subsets of the interval—π/2<x<π/2.

摘要:
The field of mathematics, especially the ‘applied’ type, developed independently in each of the four great ancient civilizations of Egypt, India, China and Babylonia out of practical necessities of daily life. This development eventually reached Hellenic Greece which did a lot to advance and transform it, paying particular attention to the ‘pure’ rather than the ‘applied’ type. Because of their similar nature and structure, mathematics is now greatly applied to science. Mathematization of science has several important advantages, including the fact that it facilitates understanding and operationalization of science. Its main disadvantages, however, are that many users perceive it as difficult and are deficient in it; suggestions are offered as how to remedy the deficiency.

Here is a discovery‐type proof of a strong theorem on variation of parameters. The theorem avoids any continuity assumptions on the given functions; and the proof uses little more than the definition of the Riemann integral.
