摘要:
This paper describes some of the myths on training lecturers in mathematics. It discusses briefly the nature of teaching and learning and it suggests some ways of analysing the tasks in teaching and learning. These analyses may be helpful in planning brief courses on study skills and teaching techniques for students and lecturers in mathematics.

摘要:
This article describes an elementary computer programming language designed to help the student resolve very basic and specific conceptual difficulties before embarking upon a high‐level programming language. Emphasis is placed on the manipulation of registers and iterative techniques. The article also reports on the introduction and implementation of this language in an actual didactic situation.

摘要:
In time series analysis, autoregressive (a.r.) models are often fitted successfully to data, and such models are usually among the first to be taught. It is therefore important to understand why such models are useful in practice. An alternative parameterization for second order a.r. models, which assists understanding and interpretation, is discussed. The models are most plausible if certain restrictions are placed on the autoregressive parameters, which in turn lead to restrictions on the autocorrelation coefficients. Fitting the reparameterized model is straightforward, and the reparameterization may be extended, less usefully, to higher order a.r. models. The second‐order model is fitted to some meteorological data.

摘要:
The meaning of the term ‘numeracy’ is considered. A set of attributes which have been defined to denote numeracy is presented. It is argued that the possession of the attributes does not necessarily constitute the possession of numeracy. An alternate set of attributes is presented. The manner in which they negate the argument and denote the possession of numeracy is described. The process by which numeracy in terms of the alternate attributes can be developed is outlined.

摘要:
Equations involving the separation of a stream containingncomponents into subsidiary streams each containing a main component (this being the purpose of the separation) but also containing a certain amount of other components, are of frequent occurrence. This present work is a systematic study of such equations.

摘要:
Students’ reactions to courses are often sought in an attempt to improve the design of these courses. Usually, reactions are obtained via rating scales or other objective instruments. There are also a number of studies which investigate the reliability and validity of these objective measures.
