摘要:
Findings from this study indicate that the use of computer-enhanced resources throughout an entire algebra course had no significant effect on algebra achievement, attitudes toward mathematics, and attitudes toward the instructional setting. Differences in ability did have a significant effect upon algebra achievement but did not significantly affect attitudes toward mathematics and the instructional setting. During the study, high- and average-ability students had a significant improvement in their attitudes toward computers. High-ability students were more reluctant to accept computers in the algebra course than average-ability students. An important finding of this study is that computer-related assignments can be given weekly throughout an entire course in second-year algebra without taking time and topics from the algebra content.

Without invoking Koenig's lemma or any other special results it is shown (based on some lemmas which may be of interest on their own) that if the set of all the real numbers is a union of countably many of its subsets then at least one of these subsets is of the power of the continuum.

摘要:
The paper begins by surveying educational practices in early societies, as well as the birth of mathematics as a discipline and the first steps towards what might be considered mathematics education. A brief analysis of the nature of mathematical reasoning and hints of the sociology of mathematics precede a brief account of the birth of modern science and technology, as well as a capsule account of the evolution of medieval society and the place of science and education in it. Some remarks on the political changes in this century set the tone for questioning the nature of mathematics, of mathematical creativity and the role of mathematics education in enhancing creativity. A glance on what we see as a future for mathematics education, with implications for developing societies, closes the paper.

摘要:
Self‐intersecting surfaces of an integral number of half twists offer useful visual models. They display interesting symmetries and non‐orientable surfaces when N is odd. Since these are ruled surfaces they are constructed with relative ease inside a transparent sphere. The equations are worked out for the pairs of points which determine the rulings in terms of angles Ø and ø.

摘要:
This paper describes a mathematical model capable of analysing a sugarcane sett cutting operation. Monte Carlo technique is applied for generating the hypothetical sugarcanes to be cut into setts of uniform length. The probability density functions of the variables such as the sugarcane lengths, nodal spacings and the end piece lengths for a given sugarcane variety constitute the inputs to the model. The experimental and model predicted proportions of the multibudded setts for a few arbitrarily selected cut lengths are compared and further improvements in the model are discussed. It is shown that the developed model can be effectively used to analyse the sugar cane sett cutting operation to meet the selection criteria for the multibudded setts.

摘要:
This paper presents a direct‐design procedure for synthesis of closed loop control systems. This method has been taught successfully to final year electrical engineering undergraduates and is of interest in that it illustrates the application of a considerable part of a typical engineering mathematics syllabus and may help to provide motivation for the study of mathematical topics.
