The authors compare the work of the A.P.U. in mathematics and in science, and present some of its results. They note that pupils do not perform as well when using mathematics in a scientific context as they do when just doing mathematics, because of the difficulty in dealing with the extra information involved.

摘要:
A gauge function on a commutative cancellative monoid M is a map p : M?Z+(the set of nonnegative) integers such that for all a,b ϵ?M, p(ab)≥ p(a)+p(b) and p(a) = 0 if and only if a is a unit. In [3], it is shown by V. Srinivasan and H. Shaing that if the monoid of nonzero elements of an integral domain A in which finitely‐generated ideals are principal admits a gauge function, then A is a principal ideal domain. In this paper I show that M admits a gauge function if and only if for each nonunit a ϵ M there is a positive integer N = N(a) such that α is a product of no more than N(a) irreducibles. An example is given to show that this latter condition is stronger than the divisor chain condition defined in [2, 2.14].

An attempt has been made to present an overview of various learning theories keeping in view the psychological aspect of problem solving behaviours of children and to explain the processes by which problem solving skills are acquired and applied. The four important research variables—as described by Lester (task, subject, process and instructional variables)—have been discussed and some research questions have been formulated for further research investigations in the area of problem solving.

A computer program in PASCAL has been developed in order to use a video terminal as a desk calculator when operating complex numbers (multiplication, division), vectors (dot product, cross product), quaternions and polynomials in higher dimensional vector and spinor algebras. A copy of this program on magnetic tape or floppy disk is available on request from the authors.

If abounded linear functional defined on C[ — h, +h] is applied to an analytic function, a power series in h is often obtained. A method is presented here by which inspection of the coefficients of this series allows us to find the error term for the functional. This method is more easily applied than others which study the functional itself.
