摘要:
This article introduces the intriguing properties of the integer seven through three brain‐teaser type puzzles, which teachers might like to try with pupils as ‘end‐of‐term’ light relief. It is hoped that the puzzles will spark interest that may kindle into some serious thought, perhaps for a holiday project.

摘要:
Today both students and teachers understand the oxidation number method of balancing chemical equations only partially. In general, the method is explained deficiently. Textbook errors occur due to the limited understanding. And the students cannot balance unfamiliar redox equations. The problems are elucidated mathematically. One means of coping with them is to teach the algebraic method prior to the oxidation number method.

摘要:
In this paper we show how to build the five Platonic bodies, starting from a constant width continuous strip, by means of elementary manual operations, knots and folds, without performing measurements or using geometric instruments. Minimal area developments are obtained by a computational method. It is particularly remarkable that simple knots performed on a continuous strip generate regular pentagons, and that by knotting these knots one may obtain, in a surprising way, a perfect dodecahedron.

摘要:
Mathematics and mathematics education are considered the world over as indispensable in a nation's efforts to attain great heights in science and technology. Despite this students unfortunately demonstrate a negative attitude toward them, even at the tertiary level. As a result of this negative attitude the number of students who apply to study mathematics is low. There is therefore a need to ensure that those who register to study mathematics obtain good grades in their examinations. This need motivated the production of this ‘Study Guide for Mathematics Students’. The guide contains strategies for reversing the trend and, in the long run, for attracting and retaining the best crop of brains for mathematics and the sciences. Such strategies include aids to the learning of mathematics, preparing for a mathematics examination and tackling mathematics examination papers.

摘要:
School mathematics in the 1990s is preoccupying the minds of many in the developed and developing nations. In particular, much concern has been expressed about school mathematics in the developing nations. There are doubts about any meaningful achievements in many developing nations. But there are certain areas on which many developing nations should concentrate immediately if meaningful results are to be expected in the 1990s. This paper therefore deliberates on immediate priorities or actions in school mathematics for developing nations.

摘要:
The topics of dynamical systems, chaos and fractals have a growing importance in mathematics. This paper discusses an attempt at bringing a course in chaotic dynamical systems to the undergraduate level. The paper discusses the choices of source materials, topics, homework, and computer projects and makes recommendations based on experiences encountered in presenting such a course at the University of Michigan‐Dearborn.

摘要:
We consider sequences of natural numbers in which each successive term is the number of letters in a literation of its predecessor. It is shown that these sequences may or may not converge depending on the language being used. Also considered are magic squares that are obtained from a literation of the numbers in another magic square. Some language‐dependent techniques for constructing such examples are presented.
