摘要:
This article describes examples of simulations in which sequences of random numbers play an important role. Several random number and pseudo‐random number generators are discussed and compared. The major statistical tests, which are used to obtain a measure of randomness for the different generators, are described and used to find a good, low cost generator.

摘要:
This paper contains a deliberately “naive” exploration of the properties of sethood and membership, with especial reference to “very large” sets. No formal paradoxes are generated, but a variety of curious properties is exhibited, whose study and proof would form useful exercises for beginners in set theory. Further, when the set of “all” sets is considered in connection with Cantor's diagonal argument, paradoxes are produced. Indeed, it is argued that these paradoxes are independent of the usual paradoxes of set theory, and that Russell missed spotting them when discovering his own paradox.

摘要:
In this paper a plea is made for introducing difference equation models in ecology and epidemics at the high school stage to enliven the teaching of mathematics at this stage and to convince future scientists and engineers that even simple algebra can give deep insight into natural phenomena. These models also provide simple but meaningful examples for the use of hand‐held calculators and computer programming.

摘要:
Traditionally the calculation of the temperature rise round a pipe buried in a homogenous earth is solved on the assumption that the surface of the earth is an isotherm. The difficulties encountered on employing a more realistic boundary condition are discussed. Two methods are proposed for finding an approximate analytical solution.

What are the relationships between students' attitudes toward using a computer in high school mathematics courses and their attitudes toward mathematics, attitudes toward the instructional setting, and their achievement in mathematics, achievement in computer programming, previous programming experience, intelligence levels, and sex? Positive correlations were found between students' attitudes toward using a computer and their attitudes toward mathematics, attitudes toward the instructional setting, mathematics achievement, programming achievement, and previous programming experience. Students who liked using a computer in mathematics classes found it to be satisfying, challenging, and a break from routine classroom work. Those who disliked using a computer found programming to be frustrating and resented it as extra work in mathematics courses. Students who liked using computers tended to be vigorous, creative, people; whereas those who disliked computers tended to be responsible, cautious, and anxious. No differences in attitudes toward computers were found between boys and girls.

摘要:
Many accurate business planning functions involve only a few key variables. However, they tend to be nonlinear and highly discontinuous. Presented here is one such problem, which is a function of one variable. After analysing the problem, a FORTRAN IV program is written to solve it. A comparison of this type of business planning with linear business models follows the example.

摘要:
By elaborating in a rather genetic way the fact of the decomposition of morphisms in different branches of mathematics, like set theory, group theory, topology, the theory of categories, a spiral curriculum in the sense of J. S. Bruner grows up. In following this spiral through a relatively great part of the mathematics which occur in university ground courses, some fundamental ideas and some aspects of the ‘structure’ of mathematics can be pointed out. The emphasis does not lie on teaching students isolated theorems, but on showing the unity and homogeneity of mathematics.

The aim of this article is to develop certain features of scalar and vector fields that are physical and geometrical rather than axiomatic. Many students of science and engineering find the approaches of so many books to be recondite and so this paper aims to impart greater reality. 摘要:
Excerpts from U.S. elementary textbooks in which the concept ‘set’ is incorrectly used serve as items in a questionnaire presented to students in elementary education programs. It was found that though these students had repeated instruction in sets at different academic levels, they were unable to detect incorrect uses of the concept ‘set’ in the excerpts. Implications of the findings are discussed.
