摘要:
It is argued that quantum mechanics is a better theory than classical mechanics because it gives all the classical results and in addition explains new phenomena that classical mechanics cannot convincingly explain. However, little time seems to be spent in introductory courses on quantum mechanics to show that one can indeed obtain even the simplest classical results. In this paper we discuss two simple classical phenomena, a ball bouncing against a wall and a ball bouncing backwards and forwards inside a box. By explicitly finding the square integrable solutions of the time‐dependent Schrodinger equation we show that there is an analogous quantum mechanical bouncing process. It is possible to find explicit solutions near the classical limit since there is negligible dispersion of the wave functions, a fact that enables the integrals over the improper eigenfunctions to be evaluated with little error.

摘要:
This article is concerned with the application of probability generating functions and Laplace transforms to the solution of specific probability problems. In particular, it presents the interpretation (or collective marks) method of van Dantzig and Runnenburg. With this method, generating functions and Laplace transforms can be interpreted as probabilities and these can often be obtained directly, without having first to derive a recursion formula or a differential equation. It is demonstrated how this method can be used to derive the binomial, the Poisson and the compound Poisson distributions, and it is also applied to the thinning of renewal streams and to some stochastic service systems.

摘要:
Both the analysis of variance and principal component analysis divide sums of squares into orthogonal components. The major difference is that the first uses external criteria, the second internal. The calculations involved in these techniques are demonstrated with an example. The way in which data may be standardized before principal component analysis is discussed. In some cases, the information discarded on standardization may be examined by an analysis of variance, and related to the results of the principal component analysis.

This paper describes a simple alternative method of assessing the profitability of quantity discounts in stock control situations. The procedure is based upon the concept of a discount indifference curve which relates the ratio of the proposed order quantity to the economic batch quantity (EBQ) and the ratio of the proposed (discount) price to the EBQ price.

摘要:
As part of a teacher training course for graduate mathematicians, an experiment has been conducted in which the trainee teachers have visited industrial situations. The main purpose of these visits was to discover examples of mathematical concepts and operations that are implicit in the organization and activities within the company. An encouraging number of ‘discoveries' were made, and these varied from food and container factories to those concerned with motor parts and paint. The concepts included those used in Number Systems, Spatial Relationships, Mensuration, Statistics, Functional Relationships, Loci and Graphical Representations.
