Previous epidemiological studies on one cohort of rubber industry workers indicated that observed mortality excesses from lymphocytic leukemia were related to solvent exposures. The results of a detailed examination of the solvent exposure histories of 15 cases of lymphocytic leukemia from this cohort and 30 matched industry controls are presented. Extensive review of historical solvent use, raw materials specifications and job description records were used to reconstruct exposures to specific agents. Cases were 4.5 times as likely as controls to have had direct exposures to both benzene and other solvents. Analysis by manufacturing production source of solvent revealed that cases spent greater proportions of their work experience in jobs with potential exposures to coal tar-based benzene and xylene. No differences were seen for petroleum-derived solvents.

In 1980, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration asserted that “non-positive human studies” would be considered in reviews of evidence only if in a study the “group of exposed subjects was large enough for an increase in cancer incidence of 50% above that in unexposed controls to have been detected at any of the predicted sites.” The concepts of statistical testing and power in occupational mortality studies are reviewed, and studies published in two prominent occupational health journals in 1979 and 1980 are analyzed in terms of their power. A large proportion of standardized mortality ratio studies have a low probability of detection of relative risks of the order of 1.5.

Mortality from nephritis and nephrosis (and other diseases of the genitourinary system) experienced by a study cohort of 3,025 nickel-cadmium battery workers was investigated. Observed (0) numbers of deaths from these diseases for the period 1946 through 1981 were compared with those that might be expected (E) to occur on the basis of rates of mortality for the general population of England and Wales (nephritis and nephrosis, International Classification of Diseases, eighth revision [ICD 8th] Code No. 580–584; E=5.49, 0=10: all diseases of the genitourinary stystem (noncancers), ICD 8th 580–629; E=11.50, 0= 17). These differences were not statistically significant at the 5% level. When the estimated cadmium exposures of those who died from these causes were compared with those of all matching survivors using the method of regression models in life-tables, no statistically significant association was found between occupational exposure to cadmium and mortality from these diseases. A separate analysis was made of the mortality experience of 39 workers with cadmium nephropathy.
