摘要:
&NA;This month we excerpt the NIOSH Criteria Document for a recommended standard for Occupational Exposure to Hot Environments. Part I of the published document is reproduced in full; Part V is excerpted. This is the first criteria document to be published which recommends a work practices standard, as opposed to a quantitative exposure limit standard. To quote from the Introduction of the document itself:The recommended standard is essentially a work practices standard. The environmental measurements are not intended as an upper limit for occupational exposure, but only as a level at which work practices must be implemented.Other work practices standards have been recommended, as in the published document for Coke Oven Emissions, and we may anticipate further criteria documents of this type.As commentary on the Hot Environments document we offer “Heat Stress and the New Standards” by Steven M. Horvath and Miles O. Colwell, given at the American Industrial Health Conference in Denver in April of this year. This is a report of Alcoa studies on the problems of work in hot environments which comments extensively upon the NIOSH criteria document.
