摘要:
A case of hydrofluoric acid (HF) burns of the eye is reported and a review is presented of our investigation into the mechanism of HF toxicity in ocular tissues. A number of therapeutic procedures that have been successful in the treatment of HF skin burns were studied in the rabbit for use in the eye. Immediate single irrigation with water, normal saline or isotonic magnesium chloride solution is the most effective therapy for ocular HF burns. Extrapolation of other skin burn treatments to use in the eye is unacceptable due to the toxicity of these agents in normal eyes and the additive damage caused in burned eyes.

摘要:
Alcohol use is an important problem among personnel in the high-stress police occupation. The impact of occupational demands, psychological distress, and coping on police alcohol consumption are explored. Results indicate that psychological distress, as an intervening factor between work demands and alcohol use itself, has an important positive effect on alcohol use.

Seventy persons who believed they had been injured by inhaling noxious fumes in the workplace and who consequently filed claims for Workers' Compensation benefits were studied. In most cases medical and psychiatric examinations found no organic basis to substantiate the existence of an organic syndrome. The subjects can be divided into two groups. Those in the first group regarded themselves as intact prior to their exposure to toxic fumes at work; while there was clear evidence of exposure to toxins in these cases, there was not evidence to support the subjects' claims of residual injury. Subjects in the second group first experienced symptoms and then became concerned. Subsequently they and some physicians explained the changes as consequences of the inhalation of toxins in the workplace. A small number of these individuals were diagnosed as “chemically hypersensitive.” The premorbid personality traits, behaviors, and patterns and functions of disability that were observed are described.

A hypertension control program established by the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1977 included education, on-site case finding, and referral to community physicians with a company-based follow-up system facilitated by assumption of all costs by the company. Ninety-eight percent (2, 463) of the employees were screened; 11% (277) had hypertension. Of these, 59% were in treatment and 36% were controlled at entry. More than 84% of the hypertensives accepted referral to care and 79% fulfilled all program requirements. By the fifth program year, 70% had achieved blood pressure control. Mean blood pressure declined from 150/93 to 142/88 mm Hg. Absenteeism for all hypertensives averaged 4.7 in the three years before and 5.7 during the four years of the program. Employees active in the program had fewer average days of absenteeism (4.7) than inactive participants (6.8). Modest cost and a favorable employee/physician response has made this a highly acceptable as well as an effective company health program.

摘要:
The most frequently recommended model for employer-provided health education programs includes (1) assessment of needs; (2) survey of interest; (3) development and implementation of a program based on the results of the needs assessment and the interest survey; and (4) evaluation of the results. This model requires a greater investment of time and resources than most organizations are willing to commit. As a result, many employers defer implementation until cost-effectiveness has been proved. For this reason, evaluation of the current model for health education programs and consideration of new approaches that appear to be more cost-effective are necessary.
