&NA;The authors studied the relationships between a history of allergy symptoms and smoking practices on respiratory sensitization to ethylene diamine (EDA) in 337 employees who had worked with it for 8 years. Thirty‐eight of these had become sensitized and were reassigned to tasks not involving EDA. Responses to a mailed questionnaire yielded histories of smoking and of symptoms suggestive of allergic disease. Correlation of these histories with latency (months between first exposure to EDA and onset of respiratory symptoms) in the 38 sensitized workers revealed that current smokers had the shortest latencies, averaging 7.0 months. Persons with any history of allergic symptoms, but who had never smoked, had mean latencies of 11.3 months. Persons with histories of asthma or hay fever symptoms had mean latencies of 16.2 months and 16.7 months, respectively. Symptom‐free employees who had never smoked had the longest latencies, averaging 37.3 months.

&NA;A total of 187 patients with lumbar radiculopathy underwent epidural steroid injection. On follow‐up 1 to 3 years later, patients were asked if their initial injury was work‐related and if they were unemployed as a result of their injury. They also rated their response to injection. Fifty‐two percent of the patients with work‐related injury v 68% of the patients with non‐work‐related injury responded to epidural steroid injection (P = 0.46).

&NA;Work‐site wellness programs have emerged in the past decade with the goals of modifying employee health risks and potentially reducing health care costs. The question of who comes to wellness programs is a key one for achieving these goals. This reviews the available studies on participation in wellness programs and briefly reports the results from a comparative study at one site. Although the current studies are limited, the data suggest that participants appear to be somewhat healthier and more concerned with fitness and health matters than nonparticipants. Factors like employees' age, sex, and position in a company may affect participation, although more specific research is needed.

&NA;This paper reports on the noncancer mortality among 13,844 white males of a meatcutters' union in Baltimore, who were studied to examine whether there is increased risk of death from particular diseases associated with the meat industry. The group was divided into four main job‐categories of the industry, and a control group. Cause‐specific standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated for each subgroup, using the US white male rates for comparison. Abattoir workers had an SMR of 3.73 (P <.05) for diseases of blood and blood‐forming organs; workers in meat‐packing plants had an SMR of 2.08 (P <.01) for liver cirrhosis; and workers in the meat department of grocery stores/supermarkets had an SMR of 2.02 (P <. 01) for diabetes. The role of occupational exposures in the etiology of these diseases was examined.

&NA;The healthy worker effect is examined in a large population of actively working communications workers. The mortality experience of 338,306 white male workers at the American Telephone and Telegraph Company grouped by age, duration of service, and general cause categories is compared with the mortality experience of US white males in 1976. Observed were statistically significant and often substantial deficits in mortality among these active workers in almost all categories. For cancers and cardiovascular diseases, mortality ratios tended to decrease across age in the subgroups with longer service durations; these ratios consistently increased across duration of service in older ages. In subgroups with long service durations, the secondary selection of the healthy worker effect in this active worker population appears to increase with increasing age.
