&NA;An outbreak of acute hepatitis in fourteen attendants at a municipal zoo was traced epidemiologically to recently imported chimpanzees. This is one of the largest biopsy proven outbreaks traced to subhuman primates. It is also the first reported chimpanzee associated hepatitis epidemic in which acute phase sera were screened for hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) and antibodies to HB Ag (anti‐HB Ag) with a highly sensitive radioimmunoassay technique. HB Ag was not demonstrated in serum from the chimpanzees nor patients with hepatitis. Anti‐HB Ag of low titer was found in the serum of only one of the fourteen patients upon serial testing, an incidence similar to that in the community in which the zoo was located.

&NA;This month the most recently published of the NIOSH Criteria Documents, that for sulfur dioxide, is reviewed. The preamble and Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter One are reproduced here in full. Chapter IV (Environmental Data and Biologic Evaluation) is excerpted. Chapters V (Development of Standard) and VI (Compatibility with Ambient Air Standards) are reproduced in full. The commentary is by Dr. H.M.D. Utidjian. This review series will be temporarily suspended. It is anticipated that when the flow of publication of documents from NIOSH resumes our review series will resume.

&NA;Following receipt of reports indicating a possible relationship between exposure of personnel in certain types of industrial operations to Methyl n‐Butyl Ketone (MBK) and the development of peripheral neuropathy, the Health and Safety Laboratory of Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, N.Y., has carried out preliminary tests involving various species of animals exposed to varying levels of MBK by various routes of exposure.
