摘要:
West German unions' early endorsement of European integration set them apart from many other European unions, but it was in agreement with German business and governments. The completion of the European Internal Market in 1992 and the weakness of its “Social Dimension” are likely negatively to affect German unions' national institutional power base. Nevertheless, German unions have little choice but to continue to support integration at the European le

摘要:
This paper reviews the literature on wage differences among industries and establishments. After surveying the empirical evidence on intra‐ and interindustry wage differentials, five alternative explanations for employer‐based wage differentials among observation equivalent workers are described. The paper concludes with a summary, a discussion of policy implications, and directions for future resea

摘要:
This study combines new estimates of occupational mortality with industry death rates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to test for compensating wages associated with job hazards. The new estimates apply to 347 three‐digit occupations in the United States. An unexpected result emerges: Evidence for compensating wages is apparent only when the BLS industry death rates are used; evidence is absent with the new occupational death rate

摘要:
This study examines the process by which men in three ethnic neighborhoods of Boston move from secondary to primary employment in a segmented labor market. Workers who successfully make this transition belong to neighborhood‐based social groups that have customary linkages to particular primary jobs. Members of such groups costlessly learn how to perceive and act in the labor market in ways that faciliate their entry into the primary sector. Workers' labor market perceptions reflect objective characteristics of the primary jobs to which their social groups are linke

摘要:
Data from a representative sample of wage and salary workers are used to estimate wage equations that provide for direct estimates of the differences between public and private occupational pay structures. The results show that at the state and local levels of government in particular, the public/private wage differential tends to decline as occupational skill requirements increase. Public employees who work on jobs unique to the public sector are paid a wage premium. There is little support for the idea that degree of union coverage in the private sector affects public wages for an occupation.

摘要:
This study uses original survey and archival data from factory and office employees in one firm to relate differences among individual employees' performance to differences in their skill and attitudes about work, and to test the association between employees' earnings and their performance, skill, and attitudes. We suggest that the way in which skill and attitudes affect performance will depend on the type of work that is done. The main results show that among factory employees, those who have on‐the‐job training and longer experience receive better performance ratings than those without training and with less experience. Factory employees' earnings depend on their performance, following the human capital model of wage determination. Among office workers, training and experience do not significantly affect performance ratings; instead, higher‐rated employees have more positive attitudes about work. Office employees' earnings depend on their classroom training, experience, and attitudes, but not on their rated perfor

摘要:
This study examines racial variations in post‐layoff earnings among a cohort of workers displaced in 1985 from Silicon Valley's high‐technology industries. The analysis shows that blacks and Hispanics suffered greater earnings losses than non‐Hispanic whites, and that this racial disparity occurred both among those who found other jobs within the high‐tech sector and among those who were reemployed outside the high‐tech sector. There were no statistical differences in outcomes between Asians and non‐Hisp

摘要:
This study develops and tests hypotheses regarding the influence of Quality of Work Life (QWL) initiatives on absenteeism, accidents, grievances, and quits, using monthly longitudinal human resource archival data collected at a unionized Midwestern heavy manufacturing firm for the period from 1976 to 1986. The sample size is 129 months (48 months of pre‐QWL measures and 81 months of post‐QWL measures). Autoregression procedures are utilized to examine the direct impact of QWL on human resource outcomes. QWL is found to significantly reduce absenteeism, minor accidents, grievances, and qu

摘要:
This study reexamines the determinants and consequences of publicly traded manufacturing firms sharing sensitive business data with their producation employees. Using more detailed information sharing variables, we find that providing a variety of types of information is associated with higher compensation, that firms are less likely to share relatively more senistive information with employees, and that sharing future market strategies is negatively related to various measures of firm profitability. The implications for firm and public policies are also discussed.

摘要:
Using data from the National Assessment of Economic Education survey, this paper examines the influence of teachers' unions and students' race on college entrance examination scores. An “education production function” is estimated for a sample of white and black high school seniors. The model accounts for variations in school distrits and student inputs and controls for the self‐selection nature of taking an entrance exam. The results indicate that students in unionized schools score higher on the SAT than like students in nonunion schools, ceteris paribus. Black students who attend unionized schools are estimated to score 13.11 percent above the black SAT mean. These findings suggest a positive productivity effect of collective bargaining for teachers which significantly benefits minority stu
