摘要:
Two hypotheses for the employer size‐wage effect are explored using data from the 1980 Survey of Job Characteristics. We found that there is a strong establishment size effect in both medium‐size and large companies and that employee‐reported frequency of supervision has a negative relationship to pay but makes no difference in the effect. While 26 working conditions reduce the establishment size effect by one‐third, it remains strong and sign

摘要:
This analysis uses individual‐level data to test the industry wage differential‐wait unemployment hypothesis. Using the 1988 Bureau of Labor Statistics Displaced Worker Survey, it examines the role of predisplacement industry in determining the length of jobless spells and finds some evidence consistent with wait unemployment. The analysis also considers the incidence of joblessness separately from duration and finds that factors positively related to the occurrence of a spell are not necessarily positively related to its ultimate len

摘要:
This study evaluates the wage and employment effects of comparable worth in San Jose, California, one of the first cities in the United States to implement comparable worth wage adjustments. The empirical evidence indicates that, contrary to the predictions of many economists, females posted large employment gains in jobs targeted by comparable worth adjustments. Male employment in these jobs was stagnant. The increasing percentage female in the targeted jobs is attributable to the combined effects of comparable worth and pro‐female hiring policies. No overall decrease in employment appears to have occurred in the city of San Jose, nor is there any indication of substitution from targeted to nontargeted job

摘要:
This study uses Wisconsin teacher salary grid data for the period 1974–75 to 1984–85 to examine the impact of interest arbitration on wage determination and salary dispersion among employers. Models of wage determination are developed and estimated using observations from a period before and after implementation of arbitration. These wage equations are then used to decompose the difference in the variance of the log wages for the two periods. The results suggest that although observed salary dispersion is greater at the statewide level under arbitration, the imposition of arbitration mitigates the impact of measured factors on wage determination, resulting in less salary dispersion within small clusters of school districts, all else const

摘要:
Employee survey data from a single Canadian firm are examined to determine the extent to which various work practices and job dimensions have been transformed as a consequence of the introduction of new production technologies. The modernization resulted in the creation of new jobs, while many previous tasks were either made redundant or altered. Although supervisor‐worker consultation and planning were minimal throughout the modernization process, the results provide no evidence to suggest that deskilling had occurre

摘要:
This paper draws on open‐ended interviews of managers to characterize two distinct types of part‐time employment in service industries. “Secondary” part‐time employment displays the typical characteristics of a secondary labor market; “retention” part‐time jobs are primary labor market jobs. Some predictions of this model are tested on Current Populat

摘要:
Using data on teacher contract negotiations under final‐offer arbitration, this paper investigates the causes of impasses in contract negotiations and finds some support for each of three perspectives: game‐theoretic, psychological, and political. The large number of “consent awards” suggests that negotiators frequently wish to avoid the political costs of a compromise settlement, preferring to blame arbitrators for the outcome. The positive correlation between the probability of an impasse and the variance in comparable negotiated settlements suggests that the parties base their judgments of fairness using evidence most consistent with their own p

摘要:
This paper questions recent conclusions that the trend in primary plan type toward defined contribution plans and away from defined benefit plans is due to increased pension regulation. Analysis of data from IRS 5500 filings by pension administrators shows that at least half of the trend is due to a shift in employment mix toward firms with industry, size, and union status that have historically been associated with lower defined benefit plan rates. Not more than half of the trend can be attributed to a “stampede” by firms with given industry, size, and union status toward defined contribution pension cover

摘要:
This study assesses the effects of employer and union organizing tactics on union election wins versus losses, the percentage of votes, and the time between election and first contract signing. The data were obtained from the organizing staff of a large international union. The results showed that some tactics resulted in expected election outcomes, but others resulted in unexpected outcomes.

摘要:
This study examines the differential effects of union density on the degree of earnings inequality among women and among men. Our results suggest an equalizing impact of union density for all men and for both men and women who work year‐round and full time. Union density does not appear to equalize and may even contribute to a disequalization of the earnings distribution for all wome
