摘要:
This study uses data on the personnel policies and economic characteristics of businesses in the manufacturing sector to measure the impact of formal training programs on labor productivity. The major finding is that businesses that were operating below their expected labor productivity levels in 1983 implemented new employee training programs after 1983 that resulted in significantly larger increases in labor productivity growth between 1983 and 1986. This higher rate of productivity growth was sufficient to bring these businesses up to the labor productivity levels of comparable businesses by 1986.

摘要:
We evaluate the use of firm‐level union coverage rates in empirical models of firm behavior and performance. We focus on the potential for measurement error in both firm‐ and industry‐level data, and find that firm‐level union coverage rates provide more precise estimates of union effects. Higher union coverage at a firm is associated with slower employment and sales growth, decreased productivity in nonmanufacturing firms, increased productivity in manufacturing firms, lower profitability, and less investment in durable assets, such as research and deve

摘要:
Profit sharing potentially augments productivity by affecting motivational variables that promote group norms favoring effort. A factor augmentation model of production is developed to measure the impact of profit sharing on productivity using a test industry in U.S. manufacturing. The model is applied using alternative exogenous and endogenous specifications for the profit‐sharing incentive variable. The results are consistent with those obtained in other recent studies and suggest that profit sharing results in improvements in productivit

摘要:
This study tests the competing arguments that organization‐level turnover is positively associated with organizational inefficiency or, alternatively, positively related to organizational inefficiency only in those organizations experiencing very high or very low turnover. Findings from multivariate analyses support the former argument: in a national sample of 333 hospitals, turnover among registered nurses was found to be associated in a positive linear fashion with both nonpersonnel operating and personnel costs per adjusted inpatient da
