Information technology and microelectronics have introduced a new dimension in the conception and design of electronics in health care whereby techniques have spun off from other fields such as defence research. In this Address examples in diagnostic imaging, cancer theraphy and neural stimulation are reviewed, illustrating the extent to which the electronics of the body itself is the new research frontier. Equipment reaching the manufacturing stage is highlighted and emerging cost and ethical issues identified together with the more general problems often common to the engineering profession.

The paper proposes a modular implementation of a multistage cube interconnecting network suitable for v.l.s.i. environment. A realistic size of the module has been worked out and certain topologies for the intrachip and interchip connections have been compared. A dual tree interconnecting network is discussed in detail giving its performance evaluation. The proposed network has many attractive features and appears to be a better alternative to the interconnecting networks presently used in the distributed systems.

The paper looks at Doppler navigation in relation to the remotely piloted air-vehicle (RPV) application and describes a suitable equipment. A height ceiling of a few thousand feet for an RPV is substantially less than that of a normal commercial aircraft and allows a simplification of the navigator design. In general, the size, weight and cost of a navigator depend on the performance required and the Doppler system employed to achieve it. The conventional unmodulated carrier type of Doppler navigator design, as used in the UK, is not the most appropriate for the RPV and the f.m.c.w. technique is favoured.A short tutorial introduction on Doppler is included for those unfamiliar with the subject.

Early in 1983 the BBC introduced its first optical fibre vision links into full-time service. Each link allows two vision signals to be carried on one fibre between two of the BBC's West London premises. This paper discusses the background to the installation of the links and describes the terminal equipment developed for them. Details are given of the problems encountered and the solutions adopted over the course of the development and of the performance of the links in operation.

Recent interest in improved methods to passively detect and characterize sources of electromagnetic radiation and radar targets has concentrated research into the ability of new and existing systems to perform an Electronic Support Measures (ESM) role. Many existing radar and communication systems inherently derive information which could be exploited by an ESM analyser, but, in general, ignore that information associated with the polarization state of signals. This paper contains a proposal to show how a circular antenna array system intended for use with communication signals can be extended, relatively simply, to perform an ESM function. In addition the ESM system proposed uses all the information inherently available in the electromagnetic wave, in particular, exploiting the information contained in the polarization state of received signals.

Multiple beams from a linear antenna array can be formed using Ruze or Rotman lenses. A waveguide fed, parallel plate lens has been described, which provides beams with low sidelobes (≤−20dB) and beam crossovers a≃ −10 dB. A microstrip version of this lens has also been described, with the additional feature of a beam port overlap network which doubles the number of beams and consequently raises the beam crossovers to ≃ −2dB, at the expense of a 3dB loss in the overlap network. In this paper two new networks are described, with 1.76 dB and 1.25 dB loss respectively, which increase the original number of beams from the lens fed array by 50%, and consequently provide beams with intermediate crossovers. Theoretical analysis predicts the beam crossovers as ≈ −4 or −44½ dB for the two networks.

Distributed computer networks implemented as passive data highways with high-speed transmission suffer excessive signal loss and distortion which, if not identified and minimized during design, result in low data integrity systems. Research aimed at improving this situation has led to the development of a model of the highway which is fully reported.
