AbstractAs to the modes of inhibiting electrode processes, it belongs to the present tasks of the Working Party “Inhibitors” of the European Federation Corrosion first to elaborate valid formulations in definition, nomenclature and classification and second to present a review on methodology for investigating inhibition experimentally.The author is offering contributions to these themes for discussion. Regarding the international character of the European Federation, these contributions were written in English. In the following part I, inhibition of electrode reactions is defined and classified in1Interface inhibition2Electrolyte‐layer inhibition3Membrane‐inhibition4Passivation.Different modes of covering the interface are leading to interface inhibition: Desactivating, indifferent or reactive coverage. Peculiarities in the interface inhibition of electrolytical metal deposition and dissolution are discussed. Electrolyte‐layer inhibition is subdivided in a mechanical and an electrochemical species.Envisaging the origin of the inhibiting substances, primary and secondary inhibitors are distinguished. This subdivision is applied to interface and electrolyte‐layer inhibition. Even by their nature, membrane inhibition and passivation are secondary.Finally, the inhibition of two or more electrode reactions running down simultaneously and their further classification are treated. It is called special attention to peculiarities of the most important representative of this group, the corrosion inhibition (including vapour phase inhibition).The review on methodology will be given in part II to be publ

AbstractIn the field of inhibiting electrode reactions three methodological aims are to be underlined: 1. to identify inhibition and its modes, 2. to determine the effects of inhibition and 3. to investigate the causes of inhibition.This work is involving one of the tasks of the Working Party “Inhibitors” of the European Federation of Corrosion.Physical, chemical and electrochemical methods are used or proposed for these three tasks regarding the interface‐inhibition. For these both modes of inhibition, primary and secondary inhibition are to be distinguished. In the case of electro‐lyte‐layer inhibition, separation of the species mechanical and electrochemical electrolyte layer inhibition is necessary.As examples of inhibition in applied electrochemistry corrosion inhibition and inhibition in electrocrystallization of metals are treated. As to corrosion inhibition, ultimately, all investigation methods are to be related to the electrode reaction taking place without external electrical field, i.e. at the corrosion potential and the corrosion current density. In corrosion protection, investigation methods should examine especially the completeness of interface‐inhibition, membrane inhibition, passivation and the cooperation of electrolyte‐layer inhibition. On the other hand, for inhibition of the electrocrystallization of metals, the degree of coverage obtained by membrane inhibition or passivation would be too high. The investigation methods must be adapted to a moderate interface inhibition only at certain active sites of the surface. AbstractVerf. gibt eine Übersicht von elektrochemischen und nichtelektrochemischen Methoden, die zur Untersuchung des Mechanismus der Korrosionsinhibierung verwendet werden können. Zu den nichtelektrochemischen Methoden gehören UV‐ und IR‐Reflexionsspektroskopie, die Auslöschung von Fluoreszenz durch Amine, die Ellipsometrie, die Elektronenmikroskopie und Röntgenmethoden. Zu den chemischen Methoden gehören die direkte Analyse schützenden Deckschichten, die Analyse mit der Elektronenmikrosonde und die Warburg‐Methode. Bezüglich der Inhibierungsmechanismen werden Beispiele angegeben, welche den Einfluß von Strukturparameter, die Bedeutung der Bindungszustände in der Elektronenbindung und den Einfluß von Reaktionen zeigen, bei welchem Produkte entstehen, die als Sekundärinhibitoren auftreten können (im diesem Zusammenhang werden besonders Oniumverbindungen und Sulfoxide behandelt). AbstractData (including literature data) are presented on the inhibition of the corrosion of Al and some Al alloys in hydrochloride, sulfuric, acetic and oxalic acids and sodium hydroxides. In this context the influence is shown of parameters such as inhibitors structure and concentration, temperature, time, medium concentration and external currents. Inhibitors dealt with include aliphatic and aromatic amines, carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones); in this context it is shown that functional groups and their relative positions may have an important effect on inhibitor efficiencies.

AbstractThe author presents, in a summarizing review, the results of experimental work aimed at finding new corrosion inhibitors for copper. Particular emphasis is placed on relations between inhibitor structure and inhibiting efficiency and on possible reaction between the inbibitor and the particular acid species resulting in an inactivation of the latter. The acids investigated include nitric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, acetic, lactic and malic acids; other media studied were sodium hydroxide, ammonium chloride and potassium perchlorate.

AbstractUnter Ausschaltung möglichst vieler physikalischer Einflußgrößen wurde die Wirkung von Nitron (mesoionische Struktur) als Inhibitor der Korrosion von Fe99,999 in 5% iger HCl untesucht und quantenchemisch ausgewertet. AbstractTrichloressigsäure greift Messing stark an. Natriumthioglycolat, Natriumdiäthyldicarbamat und Schwefelkohlenstoff sind als Inhibitoren der Korrosion von Messing 63/37 in Trichloressigsäure untersucht worden.
