AbstractThe compact scale structures developed on heat‐resistant alloys are determined to a considerable degree by interplay of the following factors:–(a)The free energies of formation of the various possible doped simple and complex oxides, sulphides, etc.(b)The growth rates of these compounds.(c)The bulk alloy composition.(d)The alloy interdiffusion coefficient, taking into account transport both through the alloy grains and through grain boundaries.(e)The solubility and diffusivity of oxygen, sulphur, etc., in the substrate.(f)The influence of the alloy substructure.These structures may be modified by the consequences of loss of adhesion, spalling, breakaway, oxide interdiffusion, etc. The principles involved in transient and steady‐state oxidation are illustrated briefly in terms of the comparative scaling behaviour of Fe‐Cr. Ni‐Cr and Co‐Cr alloys, and of Fe‐Cr‐Al, Ni‐Cr‐A1 and Co‐Cr‐A1 and Fe‐Cr‐Si alloys, in oxygen. The aim of this discussion is to present a general background, in terms of which the behaviour of further addition or tramp elements may be assessed. Attention is then turned briefly to the theories that have been postulated for explaining the effectiveness of rare earth and similar elements in improving scale adhesion and/or reducing scale growth rate. A probable role of rare earths in diminishing hot corrosion is outlined. Possible contributions to the scaling pattern of other additives, such as manganes

AbstractDer Einfluß von Spurenelementen auf die Lebensdauer von Heizleitern, der vor fast 40 Jahren von W. Hessenbruch zuerst erkannt und systematisch untersucht wurde, wird besprochen. Aus den Hessenbruch'schen Arbeiten ist bekannt, daß besonders Cer und Kalzium die Zunderfestigkeit von Heizleitern erhöhen. Auf metallurgische Probleme des Zulegierens dieser hochreaktiven Elemente wird kurz eingegangen.Obwohl die Lebensdauerverbesserung durch Zusatzelemente allgemein bekannt ist und in großem Umfang technisch genutzt wird, steht eine endgültige Klärung der Wirkungsweise jener verbessernden Zusätze bis heute aus. Schon bei der Frage, in welcher Form — metallisch oder oxidisch — die Zusatzelemente wirken, gehen die Ansichten auseinander. Die dazu vertretenen Meinungen werden diskutiert. AbstractEin Zusatz von rd. 0,1% Cermischmetall zum Stahl X 10 CrNi 18 10 beeinflußt die isotherme Oxydation des Stahls in Luft bei 800 und 900°C kaum, verbessert jedoch die Haftung des Zunders bei Temperaturwechselbeanspruchung. Die verbessernde Wirkung des Cers tritt erst nach einer längeren Glühzeit bzw. nach mehreren Temperaturwechseln in Erscheinung.Beim Stahl 10CrMo910 sind Zugaben von Cermischmetall bis zu Gehalten von etwa 0,3% praktisch ohne Wirkung. Ein Gehalt von 0,75% Ce führt jedoch beim Glühen an Luft bei Temperaturen um 600 °C zu einem ungewöhnlich fest haftenden Zunder, der auch ein Abschrecken in Wasser ohne Abplatzen übersteht. Derartig hohe Cergehalte verändern jedoch die mechanisch‐technologischen Eigenschaften des Stahls, so daß eine praktische Anwendung kaum in Be

AbstractThe influence of minor alloying additions of yttrium, silicon and manganese on the oxidation behaviour of a 20% Cr ‐25% Ni‐Nb steel is considered for an environment of carbon dioxide at 800–1100°C. Emphasis is given to the fact that accurate assessments of the effects, based upon comparisons of the behaviour of different steels, frequently require variables such as metallurgical condition and surface finish to be controlled as closely as composition. In particular large grain size is associated with poor oxidation resistance.Yttrium at the level of 0.1–1.3% increases the adherence of the oxide scale over the whole temperature range considered, but only enhances oxidation resistance at 1000–1100°C. It also results in intergranular oxidation at the higher temperatures. Manganese at a concentration of 0.5–1.0% might exert an adverse influence during the early stages of oxidation but has no effect over the long term (i.e. 1000–6000 h). Silicon is considered beneficial at temperatures up to at least 850°C, with there being an optimum concentration in the region of 0.6–0.7%.By a process of deduction it is concluded that the oxidation resistance of the basis steel and its derivatives results primarily from the protection afforded by a thin layer of oxide at the oxide/metal interface. AbstractDie in Heißwasser und Heißdampf auf Stahl entstehende Schutzschicht hat überwiegend Spinellstruktur und besteht aus zwei Lagen. Die eine davon befindet sich unterhalb der ursprünglichen Stahloberfläche und wächst topotaktisch, während die andere oberhalb der ursprünglichen Metalloberfläche epitaktisch aufwächst. Die Zusammensetzung ist dabei abhängig von der Diffusionsneigung der vorhandenen Schwermetallionen. Dabei ist die Mobilität der einzelnen Ionen unterschiedlich und in ferritischen Stählen wesentlich stärker als in austenitischen. Die epitaktische Schicht ist durchweg poröser und weniger beständig als die topotaktische. AbstractRare earth additions have shown improvements to corrosion behaviour of nickel and cobalt base superalloys in simulated fuel combustion corrosion situations. “Hot corrosion”tests, at various levels of severity, have been conducted on nickel‐base alloys in the range of 870 to 1200°C with sulfur supplied from molten sodium sulfate or from low concentrations of sulfur dioxide in argon (0.2% SO2).
