摘要:
PURPOSETo validate contents of the National Board for Certification of Hospice Nurses examination and determine the appropriateness of extending the credential to palliative care nurses.METHODSA list of 190 nursing activity statements was mailed to 2,000 nurses; items were rated according to frequency and significance to practice. Data analysis was based onN =406 (20%) responded.FINDINGSActivities ranking highest for frequency related to maintaining patient function and quality of life, comprehensive pain management, and relief of other symptoms. Occurring activities related to pediatric care and procedures associated with high-tech care.CONCLUSIONSMinimal differences exist between hospice and palliative care nursing practice. A single certification examination is possible. The credential will be renamed Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) beginning in 1999. The certifying body is now the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN).IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICEExaminees, consumers, and employers can have confidence that the certification examination for hospice and palliative nurses reflects practice for this combined specialty and is valid to its purpose.

摘要:
PURPOSETo introduce the hospice nurse to the use of integrative medicine.DATA SOURCESLay and professional books and journals.DATA SYNTHESISFour types of treatments—allopathic, alternative, complementary, and integrative—form the basis of modern medical and nursing care. A concept of multiple modalities (physical, psychosocial, and spiritual) to achieve a holistic approach and passive and active models of care is encouraged for total patient care.CONCLUSIONSA customized philosophy for healing and wellness in the end stages of life can improve life quality and symptom management even with a lack of scientific rationale.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICEHospice and palliative care nurses are encouraged to investigate less traditional forms of treatment and to obtain the necessary training to incorporate some of these techniques into their practice.

摘要:
PURPOSETo explore practical information and personal experiences related to unplanned job changes in today's healthcare climate.DATA SOURCESPersonal experience, professional and lay books and articles.DATA SYNTHESISLosing one's job is difficult, but through a process of anticipation, networking, and personal preparation, it is possible to achieve personal and professional success.CONCLUSIONSPhilosophical readjustments, perhaps through a process of group support and reflection, can assist nurses who have lost their jobs to come to terms with the experience and move on.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICEThe experience of having to find new employment when positions are eliminated or fused is common to many nurses today. With some planning and by using some simple strategies, the experience can become one of opportunity rather than merely unpleasant.
