The binding sites forUlex europaeusagglutinin I (UEA‐I),Bandeirea simplicifoliaagglutinin I (BSA‐I), and peanut agglutinin (PNA) were comparatively examined in the surgical materials from 41 cases of cystic and solid ameloblastomas and 42 cases of non‐neoplastic odontogenic cysts including dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and radicular cyst. In non‐neoplastic cysts, most of epithelial lining layers gave positive binding with UEA‐I and BSA‐I. However, no positive reactions were obtained for these two lectins in the epithelial components of ameloblastoma, except for limited UEA‐I binding to markedly keratinized tumor cells in four cases. PNA binding was irregular and did not make any clear distinction between ameloblastomas and cysts. Three odontogenic myxomas are described immunohistochemically by a panel of poly‐ and monoclonal antibodies to characterize this tumor type. Three types of odontogenic myxoma cells were discriminated: spindle cells, stellate cells and hyaline cells. Neoplastic cells of myxomas were positively stained for transferrin, ferritin. alpha‐ 1‐antichymotrypsin (α1‐ACT), alpha‐ 1‐antitrypsin (α1‐AT), S‐100 protein and vimentin; however, neuron specific enolase (NSE), S‐100 α subunit, S‐100 β subunit, Factor VIII‐related antigen (FVIII‐AG) and cytokeratin (CK1) were negative. Spindle cells were positive for transferrin, ferritin, α1‐ACT, α1‐AT, S‐100 protein and vimentin. Stellate cells were strongly positive for transferrin, α1‐AT, S‐100 protein and vimentin. Recent studies have shown that changes within membrane bound carbohydrates may be essential for cellular differentiation and malignant transformation. We have therefore, by means of immunohistochemistry, studied the expression of T/Tn related (Thomsen‐Friedenrich) carbohydrates in 13 oral lesions with squamous cell dysplasia. The epithelial grade of dysplasia was graded as mild, moderate or severe. The following carbohydrate structures were studied: Tn, T, mucintype 3 chain H, and the sialylated derivates. sialosyl‐Tn and sialosyl‐T. In general, short structures were detected on the basal cells and longer structures on the more mature spinous cells. In many cases, this sequential expression was more disturbed with increasing grade of epithelial dysplasia. However, our results also showed that some lesions with the same grade of epithelial dysplasia showed different carbohydrate expression. The prevalence of macrophotographically documented sialadenitis in the palatal mucosa of 184 probands, aged 23 yr or older, was studied in the Koster Health project. A total of 75 (mean age 58.9) revealed inflammatory changes around the duct orifices of the palatal glands. In 10, biopsies were performed for histomorphologic analyses to confirm the diagnosis of sialadenitis. Statistics with matched pairs showed a significantly higher ratio of tobacco use among individuals with sialadenitis than among those with clinically unchanged palatal gland orifices. A relationship between the use of diuretics and sialadenitis was also statistically significant. It can be concluded that tobacco use and diuretics may induce inflammatory changes in the palatal glands and that macrophotography of the palatal mucosa may serve as a valuable, non‐invasive method for scoring sialadeniti

A total of 31 patients surgically treated for salivary mucoepidermoid tumor had a comprehensive follow‐up. Two groups were classified as: 16 with favorable outcome (no recurrence or late recurrences at 5 yr postoperatively and still alive; 15 with poor outcome (local recurrences before 5 yr, metatases, lethal evolution in 11 cases). We evaluated nucleolar organizer in every case, using AgNOR count. The AgNOR count seemed better than histologic criteria for establishing the prognosis of mucoepidermoid tumors. The distribution of extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoproteins, fibronectins (FNs), was studied in healing scalpel incision, excision and laser wounds of rat tongue dorsal mucosa over a healing period of 42 days by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy using mono‐ and polyclonal antibodies. A monoclonal antibody (Mab) DH1 was used to detect extradomain‐A containing cellular fibronectin (ED‐AcFN), and a polyclonal antiserum was utilized to recognize all forms of FNs. In normal tissue ED‐AcFN was confined only to the endothelia of larger blood vessels whereas in healing wounds abundant immunoreactive deposits were found in regenerating connective tissue and endothelia of capillaries. The increased content of FNs revealed with both antibodies subsided later on during healing. The results suggest that the locally produced ED‐AcFN is essential for tissue regeneration and plays a distinct functional role during wound healing. Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a genetic disorder in which affected individuals develop extensive, spontaneous angioedema of the extremities, gastrointestinal tract, and oropharynx. Dental treatment of unmedicated patients with HAE can trigger life‐threatening pharyngeal edema. Previously, it was demonstrated that the administration of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) before surgery prevented angioedema attacks in 6 patients undergoing dental extractions. The present study examines the long term effectiveness of FFP in preventing angioedema from developing in 53 patients with HAE undergoing all types of dental treatment over a ten‐year period. Only 3 of 45 patients (6.7%) covered with FFP had a minor angioedema attack after dental therapy in 10 yr. No attacks of moderate or severe swelling were seen. Attacks occurred independently of the disease activity of the patient and the trauma of the dental procedure. DNA was extracted from an odontogenic keratocyst and assayed for the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) type 16 DNA sequences using high stringency Southern blot hybridization. HPV type 16 homologous DNA sequences were detected at a copy number of 50–100 genome copies per diploid cell.
