Nine cases of homogenous leukoplakia and 21 cases of lichen planus (11 reticular and 10 erosive) were studied under the scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Characteristic differences between leukoplakia and lichen planus in surface patterns of the epithelial surface cells were noted. Microridges in leukoplakia form parallel and anastomosing rows whereas the picture in lichen planus is irregular with microridges varying in width. The transmission electron microscopic findings confirm and correlate with these findings, the microridges representing invaginations of the plasma membrane. The keratin patterns exhibited by the surface cells were also characteristic regarding type and site of lesion. Scanning electron microscopy can be used as an additional diagnostic aid in differentiating these lesions.

In order to assess the relative carcinogenic potency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in hamster buccal pouch, groups of male Syrian golden hamsters were treated by painting the buccal pouch surfaces for up to 20 weeks with equimolar concentrations of 7, 12‐dimelhylbenzanthracenc; benzanthracene, 3,4‐bcnzpyrene; or 20‐methylcholanthrenc dissolved in paraffin oil. Control hamsters were simarily treated with paraffin oil. Whereas 100% of the 7, 12‐dimethylbenzanthraccne treated hamsters developed buccal pouch carcinomas within the 20‐week treatment period, no cancers were observed in the control hamsters or in those treated with the other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Simarily, of the various treatment groups, only 7,12‐dimethylbenzanthraccnc treated hamsters displayed the efficient induction of foci of intense gamma glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) histochemical activity within the buccal pouch epithelium. Nodular fasciitis is a benign reactive fibroblastic proliferation which usually arises from the superficial or deep fascia of the extremities and trunk. In 1981 a distinct variant, intravascular fasciitis (IVF), was reported which possessed the same clinical and histological features of more ordinary forms of nodular fasciitis but, in addition, had a striking involvement of associated arteries and/or veins. A case of intraoral IVF is presented and its clinical and histologic features are compared with those of IVF found elsewhere in the body. A brief discussion of etiology and differential diagnostic considerations is also included.

The Ca antigen has been reported to be present on the surface of malignant but not, with few exceptions, non‐malignant cells. We investigated the potential usefulness of the monoclonal Ca 1 antibody in differentiating oral squamous cell carcinoma from non‐malignant or premalignant oral neoplasms. Paraffin‐embedded sections from 33 biopsy specimens of 12 hyperplastic and 21 neoplastic oral lesions were examined by immunohistochemical staining. Seven of the 33 specimens showed positive staining for Ca antigen. Fifteen of 21 specimens of oral squamous cell carcinoma were negative for Ca antigen, and one case of focal keratosis was positive. Two children with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome, Type IIb, (MEN IIb), whose natural mother died from complications of general anesthesia, due to undiagnosed bilateral pheochromocytomas, arc described. Of particular interest is the fact that the daughter presented with many stigmata of the syndrome, including the typical facies, while her brother had no obvious clinical manifestations of the syndrome. Both children to date have undergone total thyroidectomy, and pathology reports have confirmed the presence of medullary thyroid carcinoma.

The relationship between epithelial thickness and blood flow was examined in 6 mucosal and 3 skin regions of the cat. Blood flow to these tissues was determined using the radiolabelled microsphere method. From histologic sections the proportion of the tissue biopsy occupied by epithelium and the average epithelial thickness were calculated. The oral tissues had a significantly higher blood flow than the skin regions (p<0.05). In terms of epithelial thickness, the tissues could be divided into 4 groups (p<0.05). These were: a) palate; b) gingival regions and dorsum of the tongue; c) lip and buccal mucosa; d) all skin regions. When epithelial thickness was related to blood flow there was a significant positive correlation (p<0.005) indicating that a thicker epithelium is associated with a higher blood flow. This finding may reflect the greater metabolic demands of the thicker epithelia.

Extracellular matrix components laminin, Type IV collagen, Type III collagen, and fibronectin, of laser‐treated rat tongue mucosa were studied over a healing period of 28 days by using immunohistochemical and electron microscopic techniques. Their distribution and amount in laser wounds was compared with that in scalpel incisions and normal tongue mucosa. Laser treatment caused an extensive destruction of both epithelial and stromal cells but left much of the connective tissue matrix intact. Basement membranes, in particular, appeared to resist laser irradiation. During the study period the laser‐induced lesions healed through reparative synthesis of matrix proteins which led to filling of the tissue defects. The regenerative processes with concomitant re‐epithelialization took place more slowly in laser‐treated than in scalpel incision wounds. The relative resistance of the matrix proteins against laser irradiation and the slow removal and replacement of the residual matrix is suggested to account at least partially for the lack of scarring and contraction frequently observed in laser‐trea
