The patterns of cytokeratin expression in the epithelium of 5 dental follicles, 7 dentigcrous cysts, 5 odontogenic keratocysts, 3 nasopalatine cysts and an epidermoid cyst have been studies using a panel of monoclonal antibodies. The epithelium of dental follicles and of developmental odontogenic cysts strongly expressed keratins 5 and 19 and showed weaker expression of keratins typical of stratified non‐cornified and of simple epithelia. Staining with mAbs against the latter keratins varied with the degree of epitehlial differentiation. Nasopalatine cysts strongly expressed simple epithelial keratins and the epidermoid cyst strongly expressed a marker of cornification. Odontogenic cysts thus appear to differ in their pattern of keratin expression from other oral developmental cysts and all derivatives of odontogenic epithelia appear to share similar basic patterns of cytokeratin expressio

The cell membrane carbohydrate components of 10 simple (follicular and/or plexiform pattern) and 5 acanthomatous ameloblastomas, one plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma, one soft tissue ameloblastoma and 11 odontogenic keratocysts were studied in paraffin‐embedded tissues using horseradish peroxidase‐conjugated lectins. The presence of glucose and mannose was demonstrated by intense labelling with Concanavalin ensiforme (Con A) in 73% of the ameloblastomas examined, while periodate oxidation of the specimens prior to Con A (PA/Con A) stained 53% of the cases. Ameloblastomas did not express receptors for Triticum vulgaris (WGA), Erythrina chrystagalli (ECA), Arachis hypogea (PNA), and Ulex europaeus (UEA‐1). The plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma and the soft tissue ameloblastoma examined showed the same cell membrane glycoproteins as the simple and acanthomatous ameloblastomas. Forty‐five per cent of the keratocysts demonstrated Con A reactivity from the basal to the keratinized layer, while 72% of these specimens showed positive PA/Con A reactivity from the parabasal to the keratinized layer. Staining with WGA, ECA, PNA, and UEA lectins also revealed the presence of N‐Acetyl‐glucosamine and fucose oligosaccharides in the plasma membrane of basal, spinous and keratinized cell layers of the odontogenic keratocysts. Expression of the H‐ras oncogene was examined in 5 SCC of the oral cavity. The presence of oncogene mRNA was detected and localized in the tumor tissue by in situ hybridization. Tumor tissues were also examined for the presence of the oncogene product, p21, by immunohistochemical techniques. H‐ras mRNA and p21 were detected in all 5 tumors in cells that were also positive for both keratin mRNA and keratin protein. The distribution of the mRNA was not uniform throughout the tumor tissue. Distinct spatial localizations of the H‐ras mRNA were present in regions of the tumors with both higher proliferative and invasive potential. This investigation of oral squamous carcinoma in five individuals revealed that four of the patients were constitutionally heterozygous at the c‐Ha‐ras‐1 locus and that the tumour from one patient had lost that heterozygosity. The loss of c‐Ha‐ras‐1 alleles provides a useful marker for detecting deletions of genetic material located on the short arm of chromosome 11 (lip) and has been found in association with a number of malignant tumours but has not been previously described in carcinoma of the head and neck. The repeated association of lip deletions with malignancies has led to the postulation of a recessive cancer gene or tumour suppressor gene at this location involved in carcinogenesis and tumour progression. Seventy cases (47M, 23F) of primary extranodal non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oral region were studied to determine tumor characteristics. The most frequent disease sites were the palate (21 cases), gingiva (17 cases) and parotid gland (13 cases). Each lymphoma was classified according to the criteria of the Working Formulation for Clinical Usage. Only 5.7% of cases were follicular lymphomas while diffuse lymphomas had a high incidence. Histologic subtypes included small lymphocytic (1%), small cleaved cell (7%), mixed small and large cell (20%), large cell (43%), large cell, immunoblastic (17%), lymphoblastic (9%) and small non‐cleaved cell lymphoma (3%). Immunologic study utilizing the avidin‐biotinylated horseradish peroxidase complex (ABC) technique demonstrated the presence of intracytoplasmic monoclonal immunoglobulin in 24 (34%) of the suggested B‐cell lymphoma cases; 20 tumors (28%) were classified as T‐cell lymphoma based on a positive reaction for mouse monoclonal antibody (UCHL‐1) to T‐cell related membrane antigen; 11 tumors (16%) contained intracytoplasmic al‐antitrypsin, suggesting true histiocytic lymphoma; 15 tumors (22%) did not contain immunoglobulin, UCHL‐1 or α1‐antitrypsin positive cells and showed no defi

Eighty‐one cases of canine epulides are described clinically and histologically; 73 cases were diagnosed as inflammatory, fibrous hyperplasias of which 37% showed metaplastic bone formation and 22% demonstrated so‐called plexiform epithelial hyperplasia which seems to have no human counterpart. There is no indication that metaplastic bone formation or plexiform epithelial hyperplasia influences the biologic behavior of the lesion. Phenol was found to be an acceptable positive control substance for cytotoxicity assays in a new device, the “in vitropulp chamber” (IVPC). Various concentrations of phenol were used to study its biologic effects on Balb/c 3T3 cells as well as its diffusion characteristics through various thicknesses of dentin disks. The cells showed a linear cytotoxic response to direct contact with phenol between the concentrations of 5 × 10−4and 5 × 10−2M. When a dentin barrier was used in the IVPC, phenol concentrations in the lower chamber were reduced below that in the reservoir and were inversely proportional to the thickness of the dentin. Fifteen male and 15 female HMT rats, 6 months of age, received weekly applications of smokeless tobacco to the buccal mucosa for one year. Hyperorthokeratosis, acanthosis, numerous binucleate spinous cells, and subepithelial connective tissue hyalinization were observed, whereas verrucous carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma were not seen. Karyotyping revealed that lymphocytes of tobacco‐treated as well as control rats had normal chromosome number (2N = 42) and morphology. However, approximately 25% of buccal epithelial cells of the tobacco‐treated rats were tetraploid and 5% octaploid, compared to only 11% tetraploid and no octaploid in the controls. Three cases of a newly described rare odontogenic tumor are reported. One patient died with pulmonary metastases. one had an associated odontogenic cyst and one exhibited regional lymph node metastasis. The cases lend support to the odontogenic origin and metastatic capability of the clear cell odontogenic tumor. The authors recommend aggressive therapy and believe that the tumor should be considered a clear cell odontogenic carcinoma.

The present study was undertaken in order to test the hypothesis that psychological stress is a provoking factor in attacks of recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU). The population consisted of 22 patients (17 women, 5 men; mean age 39 yr, variation 17–69) with minor RAU. Psychologic stress was evaluated by means of the social readjustment rating scale (SRRS) and a visual analog scale (VAS). In each subject evaluation took place twice: once in the presence of new ulcer(s) and once in the absence of subjective and objective symptoms of RAU. At both stages, the SRRS scores were obtained on the basis of the preceding 2 wk and, VAS scores on the basis of the preceding week. The results showed no statistically significant differences in neither SRRS nor VAS scores between the two stages. Thus, no association between psychologic life stress and recurrences of RAU could be demonstrated, and it is concluded that more standardized circumstances are needed if any such association should be demonstrat
