摘要:
Abstract. The effect of fluoride on the rat mandibular condyle was studied histologically and histometrically. The condyles of the rats that received 50 ppm fluoride in the drinking water for 17 weeks did not differ in structure from those of the control rats fed tap water containing 1 ppm fluoride. However, the condyles of the rats given 100 ppm fluoride in the drinking water for the same period showed a significant increase in both the thickness of the cartilage layer (P<0.02) and the density of cancellous bone (P<0.01) when compared to the controls. The thickening of the cartilage layer was due to an increase in the number of hypertrophied chondrocytes. The trabeculae of cancellous bone were thicker and consequently the bone marrow spaces were extremely reduced. The trabeculae contained more calcified cartilage in their cores.

摘要:
Abstract.A histological comparison has been made of the giant cells in 10 cases which had been diagnosed as central giant cell granuloma of the jaws and 10 cases diagnosed as giant cell tumor of long bone. The numbers of nuclei in each of 50 giant cells were counted in the 20 lesions. The giant cells were measured in order to compare their sizes in the respective lesions. It was found that the giant cells of the jaw lesions contained significantly fewer nuclei than those of the lesions in other bones. Secondly it was found that cells in the lesions of long bone have significantly larger dimensions than those in the jaw lesions. There was, however, an area of overlap. It was concluded that these data supported the view that giant cell tumor and giant cell granuloma are distinct entities. Some giant cell lesions of long bones are, however, morphologically indistinguishable from giant cell lesions of the jaws; and conversely giant cell lesions of the jaws are indistinguishable from some giant cell lesions of the long bones. It seems possible, therefore, that some jaw lesions are giant cell tumors and that some giant cell lesions outside the jaws are giant cell granulomas.

摘要:
Abstract.Specimens of polymerized and unpolymcrizeci Nuva‐Seal® and Alpha‐Seal® were implanted subcutaneously on polythene rods. Polymerized specimens caused only slightly greater reaction than controls over intervals of from 2 days to 1 year. Unpolymerized specimens caused necrosis, marked inflammatory cell infiltration and granulation tissue formation for up to 1 week but were similar to the controls at 1 year. No reaction to unpolymerized resin painted on the oral mucosa was obs

摘要:
Abstract.A collagenase active against native collagen was found in culture fluids of bovine gingiva. The enzyme first appeared in the culture fluid after 1–2 days and could be harvested thereafter for at least 30 days. The collagenase attacked collagen fibrils and cleaved collagen in solution, resulting in reaction products 1/4 and 3/4 of the length of the original molecule. The enzyme was inhibited by serum, by EDTA and by cysteine. The molecular weight was estimated by gel filtration to be 63,000 dalton

摘要:
Abstract.Chemically induced tumors of the rat submaxillary glands were tested for the presence of tumor antigens byin vitroleukocyte mediated cytotoxicity assays. Since it has been reported that the saliva of humans with oral cancer contains markedly elevated levels of secretory antibody, the rats' saliva specimens were also tested for blocking and/or potentiating “antibody” activity. The results indicate that saliva from tumor‐bearing animals potentiated tumor cell killing if either the tumor cells or leukocytes were pretreated. The effect was much more marked when tumor cells were pretreated. Furthermore, the addition of saliva to tumor cells imparted an immunologic cross reactivity which was not present with untreated tumor cells. Control saliva occasionally produced a similar effect, but not as consistently or with the potency of saliva from tumor‐bearing animals. Heat inactivation did not abrogate this potentiation. It is inferred that this may indicate a new system of immunologic surveillance, i.e. arming or potentiation of leukocytes by soluble tumor antigens in glandular sec

摘要:
Abstract.Bone cells raised in cell culture from the osteogenic cells of newborn rat calvaria were reimplanted in the same species of animals from which the cells were derived. The cells were sealed in Teflon rings containing Millipore filters over both ends. Evidence of calcification occurred inside the implanted ring chambers at 118 and 279 days following implantationin vivo. The calcified matrix produced by the cells had a pattern reminiscent of membranous bone production.
