The teeth of 40 adults aged 19 to 67 yr with celiac disease (CD) were examined for dental enamel defects (ED). A total of 33 of the 40 adults with CD (83%) had systematic ED in contrast to only 5 of the 112 clinical controls (4%). Unspecific enamel lesions were found in both groups, but they were more common in the control group (80% vs. 18%). Altogether 69% of the permanent teeth in adults with CD were found to be defected, in clinical controls only 19%. In adults with CD the ED were in contrast to those in controls symmetrically and chronologically distributed in all four sections of dentition. The present study clearly shows that symmetrically and chronologically distributed enamel defects are strongly associated with CD. Therefore in the absence of symptoms and signs of malabsorption dentists could easily select the right patients possibly suffering from CD for gastroenterologic consultations.

The aim of the experiment was to study the immune reaction of cells in both healthy and inflamed human dental pulps. For this it was necessary to identify, in particular, populations of lymphocytes in the pulp, and also other cells involved in the immune reaction. By using monoclonal antibodies which specifically recognize subpopulations of the T lymphocytes, we were able: 1) to directly determine the phenotype of the cells of the pulp, 2) to examine the interactions of the different cell populations. The study was based on 30 permanent human dental pulps and the method was that of indirect immunofluorescence on frozen sections. The monoclonal antibodies used were the antibodies OKT and anti‐Leu of types anti‐Leul, anti Leu3a, OKT4, OKT8 and OKla. The results obtained were evaluated statistically. The histo‐blood group ABO carbohydrate antigens are differentially expressed in epithelia in close correlation with cellular differentiation. In order to gain insight into the biosynthetic regulation of these carbohydrate antigens, we correlated the expression of A carbohydrate antigens with that of the A gene defined glycosyl‐transferase by immunohistology of human oral epithelia using monoclonal antibodies. In glandular epithelium the A transferase was found in mucous cells similar to that of the A carbohydrate antigens. In stratified non‐keratinized squamous epithelium the A transferase was expressed only in spinous cell layers, which is in accordance with the appearance of the A carbohydrate antigens in these more mature cell layers. This simultaneous acquisition of the primary and secondary gene product of a glycosyltransferase gene, provides evidence that the well‐defined sequential expression of histo‐blood group carbohydrate antigens in stratified squamous epithelium may be directly regulated at the transcriptional level of the glycosyltransferase. The number of nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) can be used to reveal the degree of cell activity or metabolism in histopathology specimens. Forty‐one cases of pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands were studied with a silver nitrate colloid staining method to demonstrate the NORs in the cells of the solid and duct pattern areas and in chondroid areas. Acinic and intercalated ducts cells of the surrounding normal salivary glands were also examined. The data was analyzed statistically and it was found that the cells in the solid/ductal areas had a higher cellular activity than the chondroid cells. This difference is probably directly related with the possibility of malignant transformation and the incidence of the different types of malignant pleomorphic adenomas. True malignant mixed tumor (TMMT) of salivary glands, with both carcinoma‐tous and sarcomatous components, is exceedingly rare. We offer a case of TMMT in a 79‐yr‐old man, which may represent the first reported example of this unusual neoplasm arising in the tongue. The carcinomatous component was mainly of solid basaloid carcinoma with focal glandular differentiation, while the sarcomatous component was composed of pleomorphic elements such as chondrosarcoma, myxosarcoma and fibrosarcoma. Carcinoma cells at the periphery of solid nests occasionally merged into these sarcomatous elements. Immunohis‐tochemically, basaloid carcinoma cells showed positive reaction for both low molecular weight cytokeratin and S‐100 protein, whereas carcinoma cells lining ductal spaces were positive for a wide spectrum of keratin and EMA. The sarcomatous elements revealed the presence of vimentin and S‐100 protein. Ultra‐structurally, basal lamina‐like material and/or mucoid precipitates often accumulated separating the tumor cells from each other singly or into a few cell group. Some sarcomatous cells assumed the myoepithelial features, such as the presence of microfilament bundles with dense bodies and pinocytotic vesicles along the cell periphery. A case of benign lymphoepithelial lesion with two large cysts and many foci of duct dilatation is reported. Clinical features, except for absence of dry eyes, indicated the case was Sjogren's syndrome. The cysts were found in the left parotid gland of a 60‐yr‐old woman and were surgically removed. The size of each cyst was 20 mm in diameter and one of them was located in the lymph node. Because of the HLA‐DR expression by the epithelium, the cysts are considered to have formed as a result of duct dilatation due to autoimmune response. The prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease in African HIV‐infected patients has not previously been assessed, in spite of the high prevalence of HIV‐infection in some countries and the fact that atypical gingivitis may represent an early sign of HIV infection. Several types of human papilloma viruses (HPV) have been associated with benign and malignant squamous cell tumours of mucosal epithelium. To identify HPV in erosive oral lichen planus (OLPe), considered as a premalignant lesion, tissues from 20 patients were examined by Southern blot hybridization with 32P‐labeled HPV DNA probes. Type 11 was found in 6 of the lesions while HPV types 6, 16 and 18 were not detected in any of the tissues examined. Using a type‐specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for HPV‐6, 11, 16 and 18, HPV‐11 was detected in 8 of the samples (all of those positive by Southern blot), and, in addition, HPV‐6 was found in 5 samples and HPV‐16 in 3 samples. Overall, by the more sensitive PCR assay, 65% of samples were positive for HPV DNA. The finding of HPV DNA in many of the samples using two different techniques indicates a high prevalence of HPV in the OLPe afflicted oral mucosa. White staining of genital mucosa after acetic acid application (3–5%) (acetowhiteness) has been commonly regarded as a sign of HPV infection, and acetic acid application is widely used as a routine diagnostic means to screen the HPV infections. However, the sensitivity and specificity of acetowhite staining to detect HPV infections has not been properly studied. The usefulness of acetic acid application in detecting oral HPV infections is not established. In this communication, the oral mucosal changes after acetic acid application were systematically recorded in 315 women prospectively followed‐up for genital HPV infections, with special reference to smoking, alcohol consumption, histology, cytology and presence of HPV DNA. Strong and weak acetowhite staining were found in 2% and 38% of the patients, respectively. The mean age of these patients was 30.8 yr in contrast to 37.3 yr of the patients without acetowhite lesions, the difference being significant. In most cases, the staining was widely distributed over the buccal mucosa. Acetowhiteness on oral mucosa was seen significantly more frequently in smokers, but the staining did not show any correlation with alcohol consumption, histologic and cytologic findings, presence of HPV DNA or with glycogen content. The specificity of acetowhite staining to detect HPV DNA was 50%. Vacuolized cells were found significantly more often in PAS‐positive biopsies. The mean day of the menstrual cycle of the acetic acid ‐ positive and ‐negative patients at examination was 14.9 and 11.9, respectively. The results suggest that positive acetic acid staining in oral cavity should not be regarded as a diagnostic criteria for HPV infection. In fact, acetowhiteness of the oral mucosa seems to be significantly associated with smoking and age, and this connection should be further studied. The oral manifestations are described of 43 patients with previously undiagnosed non‐insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDD) who presented to an Oral Medicine Unit in a 24‐month period. The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was confirmed by measurement of fasting blood glucose and where necessary by a glucose tolerance test. Sixteen patients had burning mouth syndrome, ten patients had unusually prolonged fungal and/or bacterial infections, nine patients had a nonspecific condition such as altered taste, six patients had an oral mucosal lesion such as erosive lichen planus, one patient had sialosis and one patient complained of sialorrhoea.
