Immunohistochemical study of jaw cysts: different existence of keratins in odontogenic and non‐odontogenic epithelial linings |

Keratins and secretory component (SC) were immunohistochemically examined in fresh tissue samples from 45 odontogenic and 35 non‐odontogenic cysts. Lining epithelia of almost all cases contained keratins which reacted with polyclonal antibodies (Dako, Bio‐Science), and no difference could be found between the two groups of lesions. By staining with two monoclonal antibodies against keratins, i.e., RGE53 (Bio‐Science) and RKSE60 (Bio‐Science), it was revealed that the epithelia of non‐odontogenic cysts, which were columnar epithelium in most cases, had fully and positively reacted with RGE53, while none of the cases was positive for RKSE60. In contrast, the squamous linings of odontogenic cysts except for two cases did not react with RGE53, and few cases possessed RKSE60‐reactive keratin. SC was also contradictory. All non‐odontogenic cysts were proven to be positive for SC, but only 21 of the odontogenic cysts exhibited SC. Regarding each pair of non‐odontogenic and odontogenic cysts covered with RGE53 and SC‐positive, and RKSE60‐negative squamous epithelium, it seemed reasonable from the staining results to conclude that the squamous linings were metaplastic from the columnar epithelium. Accurate diagnosis of oral mucosal lichen planus (OMLP) is essential if appropriate management is to be instituted. Direct immunofluorescence microscopy (DIP) has facilitated the diagnosis of some dermatologic diseases with oral manifestations, but its use in the diagnosis of OMLP is less well documented. In the present study, 165 biopsies from consecutive cases for which a provisional diagnosis of OMLP was suggested clinically or on the basis of routine histopathologic, or DIP assessment were studied. In 27 cases the results of DIP were non‐contributory. In 13 cases the diagnosis could only be established by DIP examination. Nine cases clinically diagnosed as OMLP were assigned to a different condition on the basis of routine histology and DIP. It was concluded that DIP was an integral step in the diagnosis of OML

摘要:
A study of HLA‐DR and DQ typing in 44 patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) (28 women and 16 men) and in 107 normal controls of both sexes was performed by using Terasaki's oriental tray. Twenty‐eight patients had erosive forms of lichen planus (OLPe). Serologic typing revealed a highly significant increase of HLA‐DR 9 and Te 22 antigens in the patient group. Considering our findings and those in other autoimmune diseases, it is hypothesized that OLP is a localized autoimmune disease and the HLA‐DR9 in Chinese takes the place of HLA‐DR3 in Caucasians in carrying the genes which predispose to the development of autoimmun

This investigation has employed the NIH 3T3 cell transfection assay in an effort to detect transforming genes in DNA from squamous carcinomas of the head and neck. Of 11 tumor DNAs tested, 1 DNA sample from a gingival squamous carcinoma was able to produce primary and secondary transformants containing the human K‐ras oncogene. This is the first report of an activated ras oncogene derived from a carcinoma of the head and neck. A total of 15 cases of Japanese salivary gland lymphoma was analysed by conventional histology and also by immunoperoxidase staining of paraffin sections. The initial sites included: parotid gland (14 cases, 93%) and submandibular gland (1 case, 7%). The mean age was 59 yr, with a male to female ratio of 2.8:1. The only one patient (Case 9) with clinical evidence of Sjögren's syndrome showed the development of intrasalivary malignant lymphoma. Each lymphoma was classified according to the Working Formulation for Clinical Usage. The Working Formulation grades were 20% low, 67% intermediate, and 13% high. These neoplasms fell into six categories: follicular, small cleaved type (1 case); follicular, mixed small cleaved and large cell type (2 cases); follicular, large cell type (2 cases); diffuse, mixed small and large cell type (1 case); diffuse, large cell type (7 cases); and large cell, immunoblastic type (2 cases). Fifteen tumors were studied using a indirect immunoperoxidase method. A selected antibody panel was used, including B‐cell markers (immunoglobulins, Ki‐B3, L26), T‐cell markers (UCHL‐1 and MT1) and histiocytic markers (lysozyme, α1‐antitrypsin and cathepsin D). Eleven cases reacted with pan‐B‐marker (Ki‐B3 and L26) and eight of them showed the presence of monoclonal cytoplasmic immunoglobulin (C‐Ig). Following rigid criteria, monoclonal C‐Ig of MK was demonstrated in one case of follicular, small cleaved cell type, one follicular, large cell type and two diffuse, large cell type; Mλ was demonstrated in one diffuse, large cell type; and Gλ was demonstrated in one follicular, mixed small cleaved and large cell type, and two diffuse, large cell type. Two T‐cell lymphomas which reacted with UCHL‐1 and MT1 were demonstrated in two cases of large cell, immunoblastic type. In both cases, Ber‐H2 was positive in neoplastic large cells. The effects of cigarette smoking on oral candidal carriage and candidosis have been well documented but few similar studies on cannabis smoking have appeared, therefore it was felt that such a study needed to be undertaken. In this investigation, the effect of cannabis smoking combined with methaqualone and tobacco on candidal prevalence, density and candidosis was examined in 55 users. Age and sex matched tobacco‐smoking (n= 58) and non‐smoking controls (n= 50) were examined similarly. The accidental close exposure of over 200 adults and children to a caesium‐137 (137Cs) source in Goiania, Brazil in 1987 produced significant short‐term morbidity in about 50 patients, and four deaths within a few weeks. Some 57% of those maximally exposed to radiation, developed orofacial lesions, notably purpura, spontaneous bleeding, ulcers and/or acute candidiasis. These lesions were probably mainly the consequences of depression of bone marrow elements by the radionuclide. Candida albicanshas been associated with epithelial hyperplasia in some diseases of oral mucosa and skin but its etiologic role in these lesions is poorly understood. To test its ability to induce epithelial proliferation, the invasive hyphal form was cultured for 5 h and 23 h in chemically defined medium and yeast‐free culture supernatants were injected below the buccal epithelium of young adult Sprague Dawley rats. The mitotic activity was assessed using the metaphase arrest technique 11 h and 31 h after supernatant injection. There was a significant increase in epithelial mitotic activity 31 h after injection with 5 h culture supernatants compared to control media indicating that the supernatants have an effect on epithelial cells, possibly by direct action on the

The salivary gland inflammatory lesions and renal vasculitic lesions of autoimmune MRL/lpr mice were analyzed for the presence of activated lymphocytes. Immunohistologic analysis revealed that the majority of lymphocyte‐like cells in salivary glands and kidneys expressed CD4 antigen (>50%). Lesser numbers of interleukin‐2 receptor (IL‐2R) expressing and interferon‐gamma (IFN‐γ)‐producing cells were present (1–5%). CD4+, IL‐2R+, and IFN‐γ+mononuclear cells were found in small inflammatory foci. In larger inflammatory foci the IFN‐γ‐producing cells were detected in the periphery in comparable numbers as the IL‐2R expressing cells although with different location. Large numbers of cells in the inflammatory foci also expressed MHC Class II molecules (>50%). The expression of IL‐2R and production of IFN‐γ in the tissue lesions indicate presence of activated inflammatory T cells.
