Blood vessels were investigated both stereologically and ultrastructurally in keratocyst and dentigerous cyst. The volume and surface densities of blood vessels in 15 keratocysts and dentigerous cysts were analyzed stereologically. No significant differences were found between them using these parameters, suggesting that their overall vascularity may be similar. However, the ultrastructural study showed marked differences between blood vessels in these two types of cysts. It was observed that fenestrated capillaries were found only in kertocysts. In addition, degeneration of endothelial lining associated with thrombosis was also a prominent feature of this cyst. While ruptured endothelium, narrow lumen and Weibel‐Palade bodies were characteristic of vessels in dentigerous cyst. The presence of fenestrated capillaries in keratocyst and not in dentigerous cyst might indicate a rapid transfer of fluid to meet the demand of the relatively active proliferating epithelium, which may be promoted by growth factors released from platelets in those thrombosed vessel

70 odontogenic cysts with hyaline bodies (HB) were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The scanning electron microscopic studies were performed on dried tissue material, which had been previously examined by light microscopy and energy dispersive x‐ray analysis of the histologic sections. The form and basic structure of both the early forms of HB as well as the HB Type I and II could be identified more closely. The early forms, the outer component of the HB Type II and the inner and outer component of the HB Type I consisted of a fine‐grained substance, which presumably goes through varying “partial homogenization”, thus giving the HB an increased firmness and elasticity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relative importance for histologic changes of the oral mucosa of such consumption factors as years with regular snuff use, hours and grams of daily snuff use. The material consisted of biopsies of selected cases (two groups) from 252 regular snuff users of whom 184 used exclusively loose and 68 exclusively portion‐bag packed snuff. Group 1 comprised 8 pairs of loose snuff users with large differences (14–45 yr) in terms of years with regular habit. Many years of snuff use did not per se seem to result in tissue changes which significantly differed from changes seen in subjects with only a few years of loose snuff use. Group 2 included 5–10 subjects showing the lowest and highest daily consumption of loose or portion‐bag packed snuff. Among those with a low daily consumption, portion‐bags seem to be related to less pronounced changes than loose snuff. The expression pattern of well‐defined cell surface adhesion receptors called VLA‐family, LFA‐1 and ICAM‐1 was determined semiquantitatively in biopsies of oral (n = 12) and dermal lichen planus (n = 5) and compared to normal uninvolved human oral mucosa (n= 12) and skin (n= 12) using an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. In both oral and dermal lichen planus, an induction of the β1‐integrins VLA‐1 and VLA‐3 and an upregulation of VLA‐6 was found on T cells infiltrating the basement membrane zone. These cell surface molecules function as receptors for collagen, fibronectin and laminin. A focal induction of ICAM‐1 on basal keratinocytes could be detected at sites of intramucosal T cells. These results suggest that investigated adhesion receptors are crucially involved in the aggregation of T cells in both conditions. Further investigations have to be done to determine the functional role of these adhesion receptor

Functions of peripheral blood lymphocytes and neutrophils from 30 oral lichen planus (OLP) patients were examined using healthy persons as controls. Two‐color flow cytometry of lymphocytes revealed no proportional difference in CD3 or CD4 cells between OLP and controls. CD8CD 11b (suppressor T) and CDSHLA‐DR+cell populations increased significantly in OLP when compared with controls, and, CD4/CD8 cell ratio decreased in OLP. Mitogenic response of patients' CD8 and CD4Leu8‐cells was similar to that in controls. However, weaker blastogenesis of CD4Leu8+ cells, the most excellent responders in T cell subsets, was observed in OLP. Serum IFNβ level in OLP (8.4±4.8 IU/ml) was significantly lower than in controls (13.7±5.0 IU/ml) whereas no difference between the two groups could be found in IFNα or γ. As for in vitro cytokine production by IL‐2‐stimulated lymphocytes, there was no difference in GM‐CSF generation between the two groups, but, IFNγ and IL1β production of patients' lymphocytes was less than that in healthy donors (57.6 ± 50.7 VS 78.7 ± 39.6 u/ml. 152.3 ± 93.5 VS 258.7 ± 65.4 pg/ml, respectively). Moreover, superoxide generation of patients' neutrophils by PMA stimulation was significantly insufficient as compared with controls' (84.9±30.9 VS 110.8±24.1 pmol/min/104cells). Nevertheless, natural killer cell activities of both groups distributed in the same range. The effect of acute herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV‐1) infection on the healing process of intraoral wounds and tooth extraction sockets in the rat was studied. A standardized size of the buccal mucosa was excised and molars were extracted and a HSV‐1 suspension was topically applied. The virus infected wounds were clinically characterized by erythema and swelling and histologically by heavy inflammation cell infiltrate and abscesses during the first week. The acute HSV‐l infection was found to significantly delay healing of both types of wounds by 3 days. Antiviral treatment with acyclovir (ACV) decreased the degree of inflammation and improved healing of the infected wounds. The present results indicate a delayed and disturbed healing of wounds in the oral cavity in the presence of HSV‐1. Between February 1987 and February 1990, we studied 737 antibody anti HIV‐1 positive (AbHIV +) subjects referred to the Infectious Diseases Institute of the University of Turin (Italy) in order to evaluate types, prevalences, relations with clinical stages, distributions in risk‐groups and prognostic significances of HIV‐1 related oral lesions. The study evidenced the high prevalence of oral lesions, especially mycoses, in the investigated population: 40.3% of the patients showed, in fact, HIV‐1 related oral lesions. The 37 months follow‐up of 55 AbHIV+ with oral hairy leukoplakia (HL) and 101 patients with oral candidiasis (OC), demonstrated that the probability of developing AIDS in patient with HL was 0.381 at 15, 0.635 at 25 and 0.824 at 37 months. One hundred and twenty‐five HIV‐infected patients, of whom 49 (39%) were at early stages of the infection (CDC‐II&III) and 76 (61%) in CDC IV, were prospectively examined. In 100 (80%) one or more oral mucosal lesions were observed; candidiasis (51%) and hairy leukoplakia (43%) were the commonest. Erythematous candidiasis was more often seen (35%) than the pseudomembranous type (16%), and appeared with the higher values at early than later stages. The prevalence of hairy leukoplakia, oral hyperpigmentation and xerostomia were incremented in groups CDC‐IV. Pseudomembranous candidiasis and exfoliative cheilitis increased significantly with severity of disease. Mucositis induced by irradiation is the reactive inflammatory‐like process of the oropharyngeal mucous membranes following irradiation. Bacteria colonizing the oral tissues are thought to contribute to this inflammatory process. The eradication of Gram‐negative bacilli (selective elimination of oral flora) in fifteen comparably irradiated head and neck cancer patients was found to be associated with a significant reduction in mucositis compared with two groups of 15 patients receiving either placebo or chlorhexidine rinsing. Criteria used were the extent of local mucosits signs (mucositis score), as well as generalized side‐effects such as the need of nasogastric tube feedings following severe feeding problems. Mucositis signs were confined to erythema only in all selectively decontaminated patients. No pseudomembranes were observed and artificial feeding was completely prevented. Twenty‐four oral papillomas were fixed in a 10% formalin solution, and 5 μ paraffin sections were prepared by normal procedure. Using monoclonal antibody NCC‐RAS‐001 as the primary antibody, the expression ofrasp21 in the oral papilloma was searched immunohistochemically by the Histostain SP kit. Therasp21 was detected in 10 (41.7%) of 24 oral papillomas. In the histologic expression, it was less frequently detected in keratinized cell layer and basal cell layer, and it was most often detected in the cytoplasm of the cells in the spinous cell layer.
