AbstractEpidemiologically a high incidence of oral cancer and addiction to tobacco, singly or in combination with other ingredients of the betel quid, are closely correlated. Attempts at the induction of malignancy in laboratory animals on exposure to these ingredients have hitherto failed. Studies are reported on cheek pouch epithelium of 152 Syrian golden hamsters exposed to commercial shell lime (calcium hydroxide) and tobacco, singly and in combination, with parallel conditioning by Vitamin A palmitate. The abnormal changes found especially in lime and lime‐plus‐tobacco treated epithelia are massive hyperplasia, keratinization anomalies, marked edema and dysplasia. The most significant findings are (1) greater epithelial alteration caused by lime, lime plus vitamin A, tobacco plus vitamin A, lime plus tobacco and lime plus tobacco and vitamin A, than by tobacco alone; (2) increasing epithelial dysplasia in response to longer periods of exposure to the test substances; and (3) enhancement of tissue changes in the presence of vitami

AbstractThe rates of release of salivary amylase and esterase from normal and polyoma virus infected mouse submandibular glands were measured in a continuous flow perifusion system. Following stimulation by epinephrine, the rate of release of esterase by the infected glands was significantly greater than that from control glands. The rate of amylase release, while greater from infected glands, was not significantly different. The total enzyme contents from infected and control tissues were similar. Cyclic GMP was found to be higher in the infected glands than the control glands, suggesting one possible mechanism for the higher rates of enzyme release by infected tissues.

AbstractTaste preferences, fluid intake and histology of tongue epithelium were studied in rats fed a zinc‐deficient diet and in pair‐fed controls. The results of two‐bottle preference tests demonstrated that zinc‐deficient rats exhibited significantly increased preferences for 1.5 × 10‐1M HCL and 1.28 × 10‐6M quinine sulfate as well as a significant increase in relative fluid volume intake. Histologic examination of the tongue epithelium of the zinc‐deficient rats showed a hypercellular prickle cell layer and a marked parakeratosis. The fungiform papillae of the zinc‐deficient rats exhibited acanthosis and mild parakeratosis. However, the pore region of the taste buds did not seem to be covered by the parakeratotic epithelium. AbstractA case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy, which occurred in the anterior maxilla of a 3‐month‐old girl, was studied by electron microscopy. Polymorphic cellular elements were revealed to be present: large melanin‐producing cells with some of the characteristics of a neuroepithelium, small non‐pigmented cells resembling immature neuroblasts, and many intermediate forms resembling differentiating neuroblasts. All cell types clearly demonstrated ultrastructural features of neurogenic cells, e.g. neurite‐like cytoplasmic processes, fine filaments and microtubules indistinguishable from those seen in normal neurites, synaptic‐like structures, and neurosecretory‐like vesicles. Based on these fine structures, the lesion was presumed to represent a hamartoma of primitive neuroectodermal cells with a tendency toward the differentiation into melanin‐producing cells. AbstractExperimental lathyrism was produced in young albino mice with a diet containing 50 % sweet pea seed (Lathyrus odoratus). After 7 days on the lathyritic diet, sections of the mandibular molar and incisor periodontal ligaments, when oxidized and treated with aldehyde fuchsin, demonstrated enhanced staining of the oxytalan fibers and numerous vessels. At this time aldehyde fuchsin or orcein also revealed marked pathological changes in the periodontal ligament of all molars. When lathyrism was prolonged for 12 weeks, both the molar and incisor oxytalan systems were still readily identifiable although the molar periodontal ligament continued to he severely affected by lathyrism. The oxytalan fibers retained their characteristic tooth‐vascular association in all of the lathyritic mice. Oxytalan fibers of the lathyritic and control animals showed similar reactions to enzyme digestion with beta‐glucuronidase, elastase, and pepsin. However, gingival elastic fibers reacted in a different way from oxytalan fillers with beta‐glucuronidase and elastase treatment.
