This report presents a rare malignant endothelial neoplasm which arose at the site of a pre‐existing lymphangioma. The lymphangioma was located on the right buccal miicosa, and the malignant neoplasm arose 17 years after irradiation of the initial tumor. Clinical, light microscopic and immunohistochcmical (Factor VIII‐related antigen andUlex europueusAgglutinin‐1) studies were made, together with observations by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The human salivary peroxidase system (SPS) contributes in several ways to the maintenance of good oral health. The SPS is one of the non‐immunoglobulin defense factors which regulate the quantity and species distribution of oral microorganisms. The SPS also prevents toxic accumulations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and it inactivates many carcinogenic and mulagenic compounds. The salivary glands secrete a peroxidase enzyme (salivary peroxidase) as well as the thiocyanate ion (SCN‐ derived from diet). The enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of SCN‐ by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The H2O2is excreted by oral bacteria and by host cells in amounts which vary with the state of cellular metabolism, the diet and other factors. Oxidized forms of SCN‐ temporarily inhibit the growth, respiration and metabolism of most species of oral bacteria. The major oxidized form generated in the mouth is the hypothiocyanite ion (OSCN‐) which must reach a minimum threshold concentration before bacterial inhibition occurs. This threshold concentration varies from species to species. The concentration of OSCN‐ in the mouth rises and falls with the availability of H2O2. This natural rise and fall, together with bacterial variation in sensitivity to OSCN‐ inhibition, suggests a role for the SPS in the regulation of the oral microflora. As a result of the rapid consumption of H2O2by the SPS, host cells are protected from a toxic build up of this potent oxidizing agent. Peroxidase‐conjugated lectins were used for the histochemical detection of carbohydrates in experimental carcinomas of mouse submandibular glands. Induced carcinomas, 43 lesions from 25 cases, were examined histoehemically with galactose‐binding leetins (PNA and RCA‐I), N‐acetyl‐galactosamine‐binding leetins (DBA and SBA), a fucosc‐binding lectin(UEA‐l), and a N‐acetyl‐glucosamine‐binding lectin (WGA). In non‐ or slightly keratinized squamous‐cell carcinomas, the lectin binding of PNA, RCA‐1, DBA, SBA. and WGA was weak in tumor epithelia, and UEA‐1 binding was slight. In highly keratinized squamous‐cell carcinomas, lectin binding was increased in tumor epithelia, but no reaction was noted in completely keratinized regions. Desquamated materials in lumens of tumors gave an intense stain with leetins. Stromal connective tissue, including collagen fibers and basement membranes stained intensely. Biopsies were taken at 8 and 12 weeks and at 6 months from oral jejunal mucosal transplants in 5 patients who had undergone extensive surgery for tumors of the floor of the mouth. Microvaseular anastomosed jejunal mucosa had been used for the primary reconstruction. Histological findings included flattening of the jejunal relief, atrophy and erosion of the epithelium with reduction of jejunal excretion and marginal overlapping of oral mucosa. Immunohistocheniical labelling of the cytoskeleton revealed thai jejunal epithelium does not undergo rapid metaplasia in the course of adaptation to oral mucosa. These findings indicate that the jejunal mucosa does not completely change its architecture and does not adapt to the requirements of the oral cavity after a period of 6 months.

Changes occurring in a population of Langerhans cells (LC) were investigated using human gingival epithelium maintained in organ culture. The enzyme adenosine 5′‐triphosphatase together with the surface antigens HLA‐DR and T6 were used to identify and quqntitate these cells. An exponential fall in the expression of each of these markers was seen to occur with increasing incubation lime, suggesting that a true loss of these cells is in fact occurring. Glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans were analysed in keratinizing and non‐keratinizing odontogenic cyst fluids. Hyaluronic acid showed the highest incidence and abundance amongst the glycosaminoglycans detected. Appreciable amounts of ehondroitin‐4‐sulphatc were also observed, particularly in the dental cysts, with lesser amounts of the other glycosaminoglycans. Heparan sulphate showed a higher incidence and abundance in the keratocyst than the other cysts, whilst chondroitin‐6‐sulphatc could not be detected in any of the cysts. A considerable proportion of the glycosaminoglycans of the fluids appeared to be complexed with protein and was released only after protcolytic digestion. The pulpal response to Protemp® (ESPE Gmbh) was compared to zinc oxide‐eugenol, Super Syntrex (de Trey) and Protemp® plus zinc oxide‐eugenol liner in 144 vervet monkey (Cercopilhecus pygerythus) incisor teeth, according to ADA Specification No. 41. Cellular displacement into dentinal tubules, superficial and deep inflammation were present only in the 3‐day specimens in all materials. Mean scores for the test material were lower than both negative and positive controls. In the 30‐day specimens the prevalence of reparative dentine under the test material was similar to the negative control, while at 90 days it was less than (he negative control, although the severity in affected specimens was more than the positive control. Based on the limited number of reports and our own experience, amyloid involvement of the oral tissues seems to be rather rare, the tongue apparently being the most favoured site. Three such patients have been described in the present treatise. All 3 patients proved to be suffering from multiple myeloma or its prestage. In a previous postmortem study, more than 35% overall incidence of amyloid involvement of the tongue has been reported. In our own postmortem study of 100 tongues not a single case of amyloidosis was encountered. This inconsistency can probably be explained by the different use of stains and their interpretation. Limited experience with immunoliistocliemical methods for subtyping amyloid has been presented.

Two cases of oral B‐lymphomas with numerous Russell body‐like inclusions arc described. One occurred primarily in the hard palate of a 59‐year‐old female with Sjogren's syndrome, and was diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytoid immunoeytoma by Kiel's classification. The other occurred secondarily in the buccal mucosa of a 44‐year‐old female whose first affected site was orbital soft tissues, and was diagnosed as extramedullary plasmacytoma. The diagnostic problems and the nature of the Russell body‐like inclusions are discussed based on the immunoperoxidase (PAP) method and electron microscopic study. The intranuclear tubulo‐filaments appearing in giant cells were studied ultrastructurally in a giant cell tumour of bone arising in a patient with Paget's disease.
