Lymphocyte blast transformation responses to mitogens and to streptococcal, adenovirus Type I, and oral mucosal antigens were studied in 32 patients with recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) and matched control subjects. RAU patients showed significantly depressed (p<0.05) responses to mitogens in comparison with matched controls, but there was no significant difference between patients and controls in response to any of the antigens tested, These results indicate that neither cell‐mediated hypersensitivity to streptococcal or viral antigens nor cross‐reactivity between oral mucosal and streptococcal antigens are likely lo play a role in the pathogenesis of RAU. Clear cell odontogenic tumor, a rare epithelial jaw lesion of putative odontogenic origin, histologically resembles clear cell adenocarcinomas. Ultrastructural and histochemical features are described and support a non‐glandular derivation. The intraosseous neoplasm is characterized by ovoid nests of clear or finely stippled cells with a mature collagenous stroma. These cells arc PAS‐positive. diastase labile and fail to bind alcian blue. Enzyme histochemical reactions disclose dehydrogenase. non‐specific csterase. and acid phosphatase positively. Fine structural characteristics include plasma membrane microvilli, desmosomes. endoplasmic reticulum. free ribosomes. glycogen rosettes and lysosomes. Many cells exhibit a paucity of cytoplasmic organelles with prominent vacuolization. Centrioles and annulate lamellae are also encountered. The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the detailed histopathology of naturally occurring root caries. Fifty extracted human teeth exhibiting some degree of root caries were sectioned longitudinally and examined with transmitted light, polarized light and microradiography. The occurrence of the histological zones of dentinal caries was tabulated and revealed a lesion body in all eases Light microscopy showed the same basic features as microradiography and was most useful when the sections were imbibed in quinoline. A structureless area below the main body of the lesion was observed in 77% of the cases when using quinoline. This fluid more clearly defined the extent of the lesion and may show a “phenolic reaction” when using polarized light microscopy. Partial radiopaque surface layers were observed in almost 80% of the sections. Histological sections of mandibular condyles surgically removed from 40 female and 12 male patients who failed to respond to conservative management of temporomandibular joint related problems were examined. The proliferation, intermediate and cartilage zones were frequently either partly or completely absent in older subjects confirming previously held views of the functional significance of these zones. There was no obvious sex differences in the histological appearance of the condyle and evidence of inflammatory change was rarely seen.

Immunohistochemical detection of lactoforrin (LF), lysozyme (LZ) and carcinoembryonie antigen (CEA) was made in obstructive adenitis of the submandibular glands. Atrophic and altered acinar cells in the early stage of the lesion stained strongly for I.F, whereas they were unreactive or stained slightly for LZ. Ductal cells usually stained for LZ Staining for CEA was strong and irregularly distributed in altered acinar cells. Duct‐like structures and dilated ductal segments in the chronic stage were generally negative for LF LZ and CEA. Secretory components in luminal cavities gave abundant staining for LF. LZ and CEA. An exceedingly rare case of ameloblastoma. plexiform type, which contained numerous hyaline bodies was reported. Hyaline bodies occurred within the parenchyma, and showed similar histochemical reactions to those of hyaline bodies in odontogenic cysts. Ultrastructurally, hyaline bodies found in the present case of ameloblastoma were composed of a peripheral electron‐dense area and central electron‐lucent area. Well‐developed endoplasmic reticulum containing electron‐lucent and homogeneous substance were seen in the epithelial cells adjacent to hyaline bodies. Furthermore, electron‐dense spherical granules, with or without limiting membrane, were scattered in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. The effect of diphenylhydantoin (DPH) on mouse calvarial bone metabolism was studied in vitro. DPH caused a dose‐dependent, reversible inhibition of PTH and PGE2‐stimulated bone resorption at concentrations above 20–30 μg/ml without affecting cyclic AMP formation The inhibition was observed already after 60 min and was accompanied by a reduced release of the lysosomal enzymes β‐glucuronidase and β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase The calcium antagonist Verapamil® had similar effects on bone resorption and lysosomal enzyme release and it is suggested that DPH influences bone resorption by interfering with calcium fluxes across osteoclastic cell membranes resulting in low intracellular calcium levels and reduced exocy

Macroscopically normal tongues were examined from 161 necropsies. Two types of lingual epithelium were investigated by morphometry and the results were statistically analysed in relation to known levels of alcohol and tobacco usage in each case. Alcohol and tobacco were each associated with a reduction in epithelial thickness brought about by a reduction in the maturation layer due mainly to cell shrinkage By contrast, the progenitor layer increased in size, due to hypertrophy rather than hyperplasia Changes occurred in each type of epithelium and were more severe with alcohol. There was no significant interaction between alcohol and tobacco. The structural changes appeared to be non‐specific reactions to local toxic effects of alcohol and tobacco. Suckling rats injected subcutaneously with male submandibular gland homogenate (SMGH), but not liver homogenate (L.H), died within 24 h. Weanling and adult rats injected with proportionately greater doses of male SMGH did not die.
