摘要:
Cretaceous burrows attributable to bees are the earliest known record of activity by those insects and are equivalent in age to, or possibly older than, the oldest known bee body fossil. The burrows consist of vertical shafts from which short lateral corridors and numerous brood cells open. They occur in a lenticular fluvial sandstone in the middle carbonaceous member of the Late Cretaceous (Late Cenomanian) Dakota Formation.

Despite the rarity of vertebrate body fossils in the Middle Jurassic of North America, tracks are relatively common in several stratigraphie units including non‐marine facies of the Carmel Formation (Middle Jurassic‐Bajocian‐Bathonian) of Utah. We describe a new distinctive ichnofauna consisting of at least 60 trackways discovered at two localities in the Vernal‐Jensen area of northeastern Utah. The trackways are dominated by small‐and medium‐sized tridactyl footprints attributed to theropods.

This paper documents a Miocene littoral boulder mass at Polopos, in southern Spain. The boulder mass overlies Paleozoic‐Mesozoic schist and dolomite basement rocks, and is representative of a basin‐wide Messinian transgressive episode. The boulder mass consists predominantly of dolomite boulders which were colonized by rock‐borers. The rock‐boring community is limited to the ichnotaxaEntobiaandGastrochaenolites, the first colonizers of a mobile substrate. Two colonization intervals may be recognised in the boulder mass. The oldest of these is represented by a dolomite boulder conglomerate in which over 62 percent of the clasts haveGastrochaenolitesandEntobiaborings on their lower surface alone. The younger interval is recorded by large dolomite boulders, with mostly large diameterGastrochaenolitesborings on their upper surfaces. These borings provide an insight into the evolution of the Miocene transgressive episode in the Sorbas Basin, and into the ecology of a substrate under high ambient energy levels.

The ichnogenusBeaconichnus(Gevers 1973), an arthropod trace fossil, includes very different forms that comprise five ichnospecies, namely B.darwi‐nunt(Gevers 1971),B. gouldi(Gevers 1971),B. ahtarcticum(Gevers 1971),B. giganteumGevers and Twomey 1982, andB. wrrightiGevers and Twomey 1982. The original diagnosis ofBeaconichnusis rather vague and potentially may accomodate virtually every arthropod trackway described from the fossil record. In view of these problems, the validity ofBeaconichnusis reassessed and each of its ichnospecies is reviewed. We conclude that B.darwinumis a junior synonym ofDiplopodichnus biformisBrady 1947; B.antarcticumshould be regarded asPalmich‐niunt antarcticum;andB. wrightiis anomen nudum.Additionally, we agree with previous proposals in considering B.gouldias the senior synonym of B.giganteum, and including it inDiplichnitesDawson 1873. Therefore, we suggest that the ichnogenusBeaconichnusis best disregarded. Additionally, we describe specimens collected from the Late Carboniferous Tonganoxie Sandstone Member (Stranger Formation) of eastern Kansas, ascribed herein toDiplopodichnus biformisandDiplichnites gouldi, which include examples of intergradations between both ichnotaxa, and provide synonymy lists for both ichnospecies.

A new occurrence of nematode trails has been identified in cyclic lacustrine reddish brown siltstone deposits of the Late Triassic Fassaic Formation at Birdsboro, Pennsylvania. During lake regression, shoreline sediments covered by a thin film of water allowed free movement of the nematodes as well as production of surficial sinusoidal trails. Continued desiccation of these deposits resulted in mudcracking. Tool marks and occasional raindrop impressions point to subsequent rainstorms that carried in sediment which covered these previous traces. The assignment of the fossil sinusoidal trails to the ich‐nogenusCochlichnussuggests that nematodes may have an ichnologic record that dates back to the Pre‐cambrian, and they are an important producer of this ichnotaxon.

Cylindrical tunnels, representing bee's nests, are present at and immediately beneath exposed surfaces of Late Cretaceous castellated sandstones in the Czech Republic. The tunnels originated either in weathered rock of overhanging surfaces, or in a thin layer of weathered sandstone formed between hard opaline crusts on rock surfaces and material not affected strongly by recent exogenic processes. Degraded rock crusts, which may bear parts of the biogenic structures, are present in sandy talus deposits usually representing all of the Holocene. Insect “borings” within lithified substrates in terrestrial settings are an unusual phenomenon; their fossilization potential in the Holocene sediments of the Bohemian castellated rocks may be relatively high.
