摘要:
A unified approach is presented to the study of performance sensitivity in dynamical systems. The performance sensitivity is measured by the maximum of a performance index (p.i.). It corresponds to the worst behaviour of the system that is subject to bounded disturbances, which may be external and/or internal. This viewpoint allows one to study the sensitivity within the framework of the optimum-control theory. The concepts of static and dynamic performance sensitivity are introduced, and methods for their determination are proposed. A technique is suggested for the design of systems that are least sensitive to the effects of bounded disturbances. Examples illustrate the approach.

The paper describes a method for improvement of the dynamic characteristic of a reversible counter by connecting a number of reversible counters in parallel for use as a velocity-servo error register. The disadvantages, due to the finite resolution time of a single reversible counter used as an error register, are summarised. A method and experimental results for a 2-counter system are described.

摘要:
The description presents a general programming technique in ALGOL using a KDF9 computer for time-response computation for linear control systems. It is a continuation of the method used for frequency-response computation and plotting.1-5The control system is introduced to the computer in symbolic-array form through the input data. To compute the responses of different control systems or to improve the system by compensation or optimisation, all that is necessary is to change the input data for every transfer function, leaving the main program unaltered. The program can be used to analyse control systems containing one real pole or a pair of complex poles, ofnth-order multiplicity with any number of simple poles and zeros.

The paper describes the continued efforts at the National Physical Laboratory to meet the changing needs of precise resistance standards which should now not only have good secular stability but also an in-phase component which will not change appreciably up to a frequency of 1.6kHz. The construction of resistance standards of between 1Ω and 10kΩ which fulfil both requirements is described.

A method of computing Laplacian potentials for rotationally symmetric Dirichlet boundary-value problems is developed. The algorithm is valid forNsurfaces of revolution of arbitrary cross-section, and gives the potentials both inside the surfaces of revolution. The solution is obtained by solving the integral equation formulation using a step approximation to the source and point matching for testing. Sample computations are given, and a general computer program is available.

摘要:
The paper is concerned with the measurement and application of radiation-pressure forces, operating at millimetre wavelengths on low-loss dielectric situated in the electromagnetic field, when there is a gradient of stored energy in the material. To strengthen the applied field, the dielectric is placed in a resonant cavity, and observations of the mechanical force show it to be substantially in accordance with theory. A novel experimental wattmeter operated by such a force is described, and a further development of it, which uses a twin system of cavities giving differential forces arising from forward- and backward-travelling waves in the main power-carrying guide, is shown to yield a practical instrument for absolute power measurements.
