AbstractThe distribution of binary mixtures of phenol witho‐, m‐orp‐cresol between aqueous solutions of NaOH and toluene or methyl‐isobutyl‐ketone (MIBK) was investigated. A mathematical model of the distribution was formulated and its parameters were evaluated for each phenol/cresol/solvent combination. The extraction of phenolics from a coal tar fraction with aqueous solutions of sodium phenates was carried out in a countercurrent cascade of four equilibrium stages. The back extraction of phenolics from the aqueous extract was carried out as a triple extraction with pure solvent. AbstractCritical impeller speeds for gas dispersion and gas recirculation were measured in 0.57, 1.0 and 1.5 m i.d. vessels, using visual observations, measurements of power consumption and liquid‐phase mixing time. A pitched blade down‐flow turbine impeller (PTD) was used. Design parameters of the PTD impeller such as diameter (0.22Tto 0.57T), blade width (0.25Dto 0.4D) and blade thickness (2.8, 4.3 and 6.4 mm) were studied. The effect of sparger type and geometry onNCDhas been investigated. For this purpose, pipe, ring, conical and concentric ring spargers were employed. Design details of the ring sparger such as ring diameter, number of holes and hole size were also studied in detail. AbstractThe Stryjek‐Vera (1986a) modification of the Peng‐Robinson (1976) equation of state has been used to predict heats of vaporization, enthalpies of saturated phases and saturated volumes for pure compounds ranging in molecular complexity from diatomic gases to compounds showing polarity and association.Heats of vaporization at the normal boiling temperature are reproduced within 2% for the majority of the compounds tested. Similar results were obtained for the enthalpy of the saturated phases. Revisedk1parameters of the PRSV equation of state are reported for alkanes.An empirical correction has been developed for calculating saturated liquid volumes from the liquid volumes given by the PRSV equation of state. For the range of reduced temperatures from 0.5 to 0.99, deviations from experimental values are smaller than 4%. AbstractA systematic and computationally efficient approach for the estimation of the interaction parameters in equations of state using binary vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) data is presented. Initially, the best set of interaction parameters is estimated by implicit least squares. Subsequently, the VLE calculations are performed using these parameters. Based on the quality of the fit it is decided whether these estimates suffice or implicit maximum likelihood estimation should be performed to obtain the statistically best values. Estimation subject to the liquid phase stability constraint is performed when erroneous phase behavior is computed. The approach is illustrated with typical examples.
