AbstractA small fixed‐bed catalytic reactor and a gas chromatographic analytical method were used to investigate the effects of oxygen on nitric oxide reduction by hydrogen over metal alloys. This work follows similar investigations, previously reported, into the reduction of nitric oxide with hydrogen in the absence of oxygen. The rate of oxygen consumption was directly proportional to hydrogen concentration but independent of oxygen concentration, at oxygen and hydrogen partial pressures of 4 — 7 × 10−3atm., and 1 — 11 × 10−3atm., respectively, and space velocities of 43,000 – 45,000 hr−3. The activation energy for Monel* alloy was 8.8 kcals* g* mole−1over a temperature range 347 – 502°CIn comparing Monel and brass catalysts some selectivity in the reduction of nitric oxide in the presence of oxygen was observed. Depending on the conditions to which Monel has been subjected, its activity at a given temperature was found to vary with time from

AbstractIt has been demonstrated that SO2acts as an efficient dehydrogenation agent in the conversion of ethylbenzene to styrene in the presence of alkali and alkaline earth metal oxide doped alumina and titania catalysts. Development of these catalysts, which give styrene yields of greater than 80% per pass, is described in the paper. The catalysts allow the use of close to stoichiometric amounts of sulphur dioxide, are active in the presence of steam diluent and show low deactivation with time. The effect of varying process conditions such as temperature, reactant concentration and diluent amount is also described.

AbstractIn the SO2dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene using alkalized alumina or titania catalysts, addition of small amounts of oxygen results in (1) higher styrene yields at equivalent SO2concentrations, or (2) equivalent styrene yields with lower SO2requirements. By staging the oxygen additions, styrene yields of greater than 80% are achieved at SO2levels as low as 0.15 mole/mole ethylbenzene when 0.45 mole O2is added in increments of 0.15 mole. The low SO2concentration and staging of the oxygen result in a high selectivity (94%) for the reaction to styrene by minimizing both byproduct formation and combustion.

AbstractIsothermal P‐x data for the binary system ethylene‐propane were measured at four temperatures by means of a total pressure apparatus. Equilibrium vapor compositions were calculated with the supporting properties obtained from the Clausius Equation of state. In the calculation, the parameters of the Clausius Equation were considered to be temperature‐dependent. The validity of the apparatus and the proposed method of calculation was established by comparing satisfactorily phase equilibrium values obtained in this study with those reported in the literature for the binary systems argon‐nitrogen and argon‐methane. AbstractOptimal two point control and operating policies have been developed for a semi‐works scale 10 tray distillation column separating methanol and water. Two controllers, based on different control philosophies were synthesized. They are:1The controller that will bring the product compositions to their desired values while keeping off‐specification products to a minimum.2The controller that will bring the product compositions to their desired values while maintaining the average product composition of the control period at the desired level.Two types of disturbances were studied, namely disturbances in the feed stream and changes in product specifications.The column operation was represented by a linearized dynamic mathematical model based on a component material balance. The solution of the problem was obtained by application of the minimum principle of Fontryagin and the modified Riccati transformation technique.
