AbstractWith water as the conveying liquid the pressure gradient of a train of spheres is comprised of a basic pressure gradient due to shear of the surrounding liquid, to which has to be added a very small density‐dependent increment due to solid friction, and a further increment due to any irregularity of the spheres. With viscous liquids the pressure gradient generally rises rapidly with specific gravity and with increase of viscosity.Even at the low specific gravity of 1.25 the power require‐nients of cast spheres conveyed by water are generally lower than those of smooth cylinders, and the advantage increases with increase of specific gravity. AbstractA simple “cell” method for concentrated suspensions has been used to construct a model for the rheological behavioi of blood. The model includes the physical pioperties of the suspending medium, red cell membrane and red cell fluid content. Predictions of the gross viscosity of red cell suspensions are found to agree very well with experiment in the cases of hardened red cells (or normal red cells at very low shear rate) and of normal red cells in the asyniptotic limit of high shear rates. The behavior at intermediate shear rates requires a knowledge of the visco‐plastic properties of the membrane and a number of membrane models are investigated. Of particular interest is a plastic membrane which employs a membrane yield stress obtained from other experiments and whose results are qualitatively in agreement with the viscometric data at these intermediate shear

AbstractThe individual phase holdups in two (liquid‐air, liquid‐solids) and three (liquid‐air‐solids) phase fluidized beds have been measured over a wide range of liquid and gas velocities. Ex‐periments were canied out in a large two‐dimensional bed. Three solids were used ranging in size from 1 to 6 mm.The effect of viscosity (1‐70 cp) was determined using solutions of sugar and carboxymethyl cellulose of different concentrations. Various acetone‐water mixtures were employed to examine the effect of surface tension in the range 40‐73 dyne/cm.Beds of particles having a minimum fluidizing velocity in the liquid of less than 1.28 cm/sec were found to initially contract upon the injection of gas. AbstractData have been compiled and analysed on the volume and area of 53 oil spills on land in Alberta. Comparable data are presented for smaller experimental spills in the Mackenzie Valley, North West Territories. From these spill data and consideration of the flow characteristics of oil on the permeable terrain of the Mackenzie Valley, an equation is derived to predict the likely area affected by an oil spill from the proposed Mackcnzic Valley Oil Pipeline, namely:‐Spill Area (m2) = 53.5( Volume (m3) )0.

AbstractThis work deals with thc influence of unheated vertical walls, symnietrically placed with respect to a single heated horizontal cylinder, upon the natural convection heat transfer froni a heated cylinder. The study is experimental. By using air, water and Frecon 113 as working flnids, a Rayleigh number range of 10 to 500,000 lias been investigated. Various conibiuations of wall spacing and wall height have been examined. Empirical correlations of Nussclt number with Rayleigh nnmber and geometric parameters are presented. The presence of walls enhances heat transfer froni the cylinder for certain geometries. Wall spacings smaller than two diameters have not been investigated.
