AbstractA critical examination is made of the approaches used by recent investigators to the prediction of fluid flow distribution and pressure drop in spouted beds. Mathematical models are assessed both with respect to their theoretical validity and their agreement with experiment. Some of the models are rationally modified in order to increase their theoretical acceptability and their conformity to experimental observation. New experimental data on both flow and pressure distribution are presented. Desirable directions for future research are indicated.

AbstractExperiments conducted with recirculating test loops show that the rate equations for rod and ball mill grinding can be applied to the changes induced by pumping. Selection rate constants in the range considered were found to be rather insensitive to particle size but strongly time dependent. This time dependence can be attributed to changes in particle shape dominating over fracture as a degradation mechanism. Pump construction and speed appeared to be of considerable importance in determining breakage rates.

AbstractExperiments were carried out to measure the drop size distribution in the spray produced by a full cone nozzle. At the center of the spray the distribution has one peak that can be expressed as a logarithmic normal distribution function. However, the distribution at other part of the spray has two peaks. Here it can be expressed as the sum of two distribution functions. At the vertical distance of 50 cm from the nozzle and the radial distance of 20 cm from the center of the spray, the geometric mean diameters of the first and the second peak are 61 and 235 μm, respectively, for an injection pressure of 294 KPa. For the same condition, the logarithmic standard deviations of the first and the second peak are 2.08 and 2.40, respectively. At the same position in the spray the geometric mean diameter varies in proportion to —0.2 power of injection pressure and the logarithmic standard deviation does not depend on injection pressu

摘要:
AbstractWavy flow of a thin pseudoplastic fluid film down a smooth vertical plate has been analytically studied. A boundary layer equation of motion was solved to obtain expressions which permit the prediction of characteristic parameters values of pseudoplastic liquids in wave motion. The presented analysis gives better agreement between predicted and measured values of wavelength and critical regime for wave inception than the existing theories. Also a good agreement was obtained between predicted and measured values of the mean film thickness.

AbstractThe ice nuclation temperature in a typical water supply was measured and found in general to be in the range of —4° to —7°C. This amount of supercooling is very significant in a water main in that it will have a major effect on the way in which a pipe freezes. The effects of the temperature‐time history of the water, of the presence of certain nuclating agents and of mechanical vibration on the nucleation temperature were determined and were related to the behaviour of undissolved particulate matter in the water. In addition to determining the nucleation temperature in a water supply under various conditions this study also serves to illustrate some of the phenomena that can be expected in general when hetergeneous nucleation

AbstractIn a slurry of radioactive particles, radiation count and solids concentration are related by a Fredholm equation of the first kind. Two iterative methods are described and conditions for their convergence are given. Two hypothetical examples illustrate computational difficulties and their solution. Experiments with slurries of radioactive praseodymium oxalate demonstrate the feasibility of the method. Solutions are proposed for various practical problems which arise.

AbstractA computational procedure using thermodynamic properties evaluated by the Soave‐Redlich‐Kwong' (SRK) equation of state or the Peng‐Robinson (PR) equation of state is developed for multistage multicomponent separation processes. The procedure makes use of the Ishii‐Otto convergence scheme with the proposed modifications for application with the equation of state. A new technique is developed to improve an initial estimation of temperature profile in a column. The computational procedure is tested on CDC CYBER 172 computer for a wide range of problems including lean oil absorbers, reboiled absorbers and fractionators and a debutaniser operating in a natural gas processing plant in Alberta. The computational results are compared with those obtained using the Chao‐Seader model for generating the required thermodynamic properties. It is concluded that the present computational procedure can be used more reliably over a wider range of processing conditions such as those involved in the cryogenic separation of natural gases and in the separation of heavy hydrocarbon

AbstractA kinetic model is proposed to describe the mechanisms of substrate removal in continuous‐flow, stirred bioteactors for bacterial autocatalytic reactions.
