AbstractTwo‐phase solids‐in‐air flow was experimentally studied in a once‐through circular tube flow system using nominal 25μ and 50μ spherical glass beads. At mass flow ratios up to 1.6, the friction factor was found to be generally higher than that for air flow alone but considerably less than that for a single‐phase fluid having a density the same as that of the mixture.The pressure drop experienced by the 2 phase system of 25μ beads and air was found to show true drag reduction.A continuum mechanics analysis showed the viscous stresses and Reynolds stresses to be significantly affected by solid parti

AbstractA new model is presented for treating transient freezing in laminar tube‐flow. The liquid motion is constrained by requiring head‐loss versus flow‐rate to match that of a linear pump‐characteristic curve. This feature enables the model to describe freezing conditions which may lead to occlusion of the tube with solid‐phase material.The results demonstrate the sensitivity of tube occlusion both to temperature and liquid‐pumping capability. AbstractThis study is concerned with the developing temperature field for flow in circular tubes and parallel plate channels with mass transfer through the wall. Some unique features of the developing temperature field are outlined for both constant temperature and constant heat flux boundary conditions. Solutions to the heat transfer problem are extended to include arbitrary prescribed temperature or heat flux boundary conditions. A practical problem is solved in two ways, utilizing respectively these solutions, and a comparison of the results is made.

AbstractThe various mass‐transfer resistances that occur in a packed bed of zeolite granules contribute to the gas chromatographic “C” terms that determine the relative width (or second moment) of a gas chromatographic peak. It was assumed that mass transport in the micropores of the crystallites was independent of the nature of the carrier gas. From measurements with hydrocarbon pulses in hydrogen and nitrogen carrier gases, it was possible by the method of Giddings and Schettler to separate the gas phase resistances from the micropore resistances. AbstractThe reaction between a porous solid pellet and a gas is analyzed in the asymptotic region of the effectiveness factor. The solid consumption is divided in two stages. The influences of effective diffusivity and surface area profiles are taken into account for both stages through a correction modulus of the effectiveness factor. AbstractRelationships have been developed for the calculation of the viscosity of a polar gas at atmospheric pressure from macroscopic parameters available for the substance. The molecular force constants for the Stockmayer potential determined by Monchick and Mason from viscosity data were related to the critical constants of the substance and the parameters ω and × defined through the vapor pressure. For 10 polar gases, an average deviation of approximately 3.0% was obtained between experimental viscosities and values calculated with the relationships of this study. AbstractPrigogine's corresponding states approach to equilibrium properties of pure r‐mers is extended to include transport properties. For r‐mer molecules, besides the alike element pair potential parameters, additional quantities are required to characterize the geometrical structure of the molecule and thereby describe more adequately pair potential interactions. As an example, the theory is applied to the homologous series of liquid n‐alkanes. The characteristic parameters for each member of the homologous series are determined using pure component viscosity data at one atmosphere and pure component denstiy data at one temperature and atmospheric pressure. The technique correlates pure component r‐mer transport properties (viscosity — 981 points, thermal conductivity — 216 points) over a wide range of temperature and pressure within experimental error.
