摘要:
AbstractIt has been known for some time that many continuous chemical reactors give the greatest conversion when axial dispersion is minimized, i.e., when plug flow occurs. This paper considers the problem of attaining plug flow in continuous flow systems. The geometrical configuration of a tube wound into a helix is suggested us a convenient and efficient means of producing secondary currents which promote plug flow. On the basis of tracer distribution tests and pressure drop data it is conclusively shown that helical coils are far superior to straight tubes or packed beds in minimizing axial dispersion and approaching plug flow.

摘要:
AbstractThe reduction of ferrous chloride with hydrogen at atmospheric pressure has been investigated at temperatures up to 583°C. The results show that the reaction rate is limited by the rate of diffusion of hydrogen chloride produced in the reaction. At constant temperature the rate is proportional to the difference between the equilibrium partial pressure and the back pressure of hydrogen chloride. The reaction rate has a strong dependence on temperature, corresponding to an “apparent activation energy” of 19.9 K. cal./mole. A reaction mechanism involving vaporization of ferrous chloride is sugge

摘要:
AbstractThe second order, homogeneous reaction between sodium thiosulphate and hydrogen peroxide was used to study the mixing in a 2.5‐liter, continuous flow stirred tank reactor and in a 50‐gallon pilot unit. The residence time distribution was measured with deionized water and pulse injection of a tracer. At low speeds the agitation was related to a “segregation” model. The region of “maximum mixedness” and the onset of “perfect mixing” were correlated with both horsepower input and recirculation rate wit

摘要:
AbstractChemical processes are generally required to use sampled data. By the nature of the sampling method, differences exist between the known sample data theory and that related to chemical processes.Taking a sample from a chemical process stream really measures the weighted mean. The frequency filtering effect of this sampling is analyzed. The significant parameters and their effects are pointed out. Several weighting functions are evaluated and the relative values discussed.A continuous stirred tank reactor system is analyzed. The responses to the actual signal and the sampled signal are compared. This points out the validity of this method for use in a predictor model reference control system for example.

摘要:
AbstractAn idealized suspension of plastic spheres is used in order to demonstrate the strong effect of particle flocculation on settling velocity and solids flux. The solids flux curve for the upper region of the thickener is used to show that any layers of particles formed here should never have concentrations much greater than that of the feed. Flux curves based on batch tests give an adequate measure of the solids handling capacity of a continuous thickener. The inclination of the vessel always increases the continuous solids handling capacity. For dispersed systems the increase is greater than for flocculated systems; reasons are suggested for this effect.

摘要:
AbstractThe very high temperatures associated with rocket motors have necessitated the development of new materials and techniques for thermally insulating various rocket components. Refractory fibres, in combination with heat resistant resins, have proven to be most promising. Composite materials such as metal‐ceramic combinations have also been used to meet the needs of special applications. Techniques developed at the Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment for using these new materials in a 17‐inch diameter solid propellant rocket motor are described in det
