AbstractWe characterize the class of profit functions termed VIPS for “virtually ideal production system.” VIPS is consistent with all derived demands being linear in numeric functions of output prices. A flexible but parsimonious version of the VIPS profit function is specified and the implied supply‐response system is estimated using aggregate U.S. agricultural data.

AbstractBuilding on Glenn Johnson's asset fixity theory, this article introduces sunk cost and temporal uncertainty in Jorgenson's neoclassical theory of investment. Under the assumption of risk neutrality, we show how sunk cost and temporal risk affect the implicit rental value of capital and investment and entry‐exit decisions. Results suggest there are important interactions between sunk cost and the effects of temporal uncertainty on production behavior.

AbstractThis study examines the potential effects on crop insurance of more detailed yield risk classifications combined with alternative premium‐setting techniques, and higher yield guarantees combined with coinsurance. Corn producers in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, were surveyed for their responses to these changes. Response to area yield insurance is also evaluated. The modified MPCI program, area yield insurance, and two types of disaster payment programs are also compared in terms of their costs and coverage.

AbstractDynamic programming techniques are used to evaluate effects of uncertainty about continuation of farm programs on planting decisions during the last year of the 1990 Farm Bill. Results indicate farm‐level decisions are affected by uncertainty only when the farmer's subjective probability of the continuation of farm programs is very low. The optimal value functions in different versions of the model can also be used to estimate the implicit value of base acreage.

AbstractDepartments use student evaluations of teaching (SETs) with little evidence that evaluation forms and procedures measure or contribute to teaching quality. SETs in agricultural economics and related departments in the United States and Canada are examined here in a resource allocation framework. Empirical models are estimated which characterize faculty reliance on SETs and faculty satisfaction with SET forms. We find that departmental reliance on SETs increases with faculty participation, that faculty have specific preferences for SET form and content, and that improvements in SETs are more likely to result from increasing the quality rather than the quantity of SET questions.
