AbstractIt is commonly asserted that with release from economic regulations, motor carriers will eliminate or sharply reduce services to small and inconveniently located shipper/receivers. In this study the experiences of shipper/receivers under Florida deregulation are examined. Shipper/receiver experiences are compared according to firm size, community size, and proximity to major metropolitan areas or highways. The results indicate that while firm size has little bearing on service, locational factors are important. For all shipper/receiver subgroups, however, those indicating improvements greatly outnumber those reporting erosions in service.

AbstractThis paper demonstrates formally that type I and type II income multipliers are proportional across all sectors and that in any input‐output model, the difference between the multipliers can range from zero to a maximum of the reciprocal of one less the propensity to consume locally. The conditions which lead to these two extreme values are discussed. For intermediate situations, the difference is decomposed into proportions attributable to final payments and imports.

AbstractResults of this study raise serious questions concerning the reliability of a widely used commercial linear programming package. Three versions of IBM linear programming software were considered in the study: MPSX, MPS/360,and MPSX/370. Repeated solution of a large linear programming problem using MPSX yielded different objective function values. All solutions were found to be nonoptimal when compared to the dual solution. When the same problem was solved repeatedly using MPS/360or MPSX/370, the optimal solution was obtained each time. Users of the IBM MPSX linear programming package should consider alternative linear programming software.
