AbstractThis paper presents a simple computational procedure for determining a consumer's willingness to pay to have a price stabilization policy implemented. Numerical simulations are then provided which demonstrate that the commonly used expected surplus measures (whether Hicksian or Marshallian) can in fact seriously misstate the true benefits of price stabilization. These simulations also illustrate the extent to which the results may be dependent upon the assumptions made—implicitly or explicitly—regarding the consumer's attitudes toward risk, thereby underscoring the need to conduct sensitivity analyses to determine the robustness of cost‐benefit assessments with respect to these assumptions.

AbstractStorage planners in developing countries often exploit scale economies in grain facilities by building large units far from producers without accounting for the effect on transport costs. Capacitated networks with an approximate master program solve this plant size‐location problem, offering computational efficiency, ease of use, and productive interaction with planners unfamiliar with programming techniques. Tests with transport costs in three Brazilian production areas recommend decentralization of storage—more smaller units closer to farmers, a conclusion supported by sensitivity analysis and recent experience of farmers, planners, and cooperative officials.

AbstractA travel cost model is used to estimate losses in the net economic value of the Adirondack recreational fishery resulting from damages caused by acidic deposition. Annual losses to New York resident anglers are estimated to be approximately $@@‐@@1 million per year in 1976 dollars. Although there are many reasons why these damages understate the full extent of losses to both current users and others, this research represents one of the initial attempts to quantify one type of cost associated with the acidic deposition problem.

AbstractRisk associated with stochastic input‐output coefficients and prices is modeled in a programming specification based upon mean‐variance analysis and chance‐constrained programming. The algorithm which exploits the features of MINOS, a commercially available computer program, is developed and applied to Australian agriculture. Convergence of the algorithm is discussed. With the data used, the thirty runs of this problem achieved a fast convergence with no more than five cycles. The model was used to derive supply response functions of export commodities of Australian agriculture. The relevant information was generated via parametric variations of prices selected according to a suitable experimental design.

AbstractOften the estimation of agricultural production technologies in less developed countries is achieved by dividing the sample arbitrarily into “small” and “large” farms and estimating a separate production function for each group. This is equivalent to including an appropriate dummy variable in a single regression on the whole sample. A modification of this approach is to replace the dummy variable (a step‐function) by either a cumulative normal or logistic function. The parameters of such a “generalized dummy variable” convey valuable information on whether a small‐large categorization is appropriate and, if so, where the division should be made.
