摘要:
AbstractRelative to a no‐storage regime, competitive storage of soybeans greatly reduces the variance of both annual prices and annual consumption. Variance of production is increased. Expected values of price, consumption, and production are not affected. The government could reduce price variance by about 70 percent of its competitive level through subsidizing storage activity. The research procedure is based on a model of competitive storage under conditions of uncertainty and assuming rational expectations. Farm‐level demand and supply functions are estimated. Simulation is used to generate large random samples of values for soybean prices, consumption, production, and year‐end stocks.

摘要:
AbstractDynamic regression equations are estimated for each beef cattle breeding herd and beef cattle inventories at two levels of aggregation, the U.S. and Montana. The analysis for Montana was utilized as a guide for specification of the national equation to reduce the inference problem associated with letting the sample data help specify the model. Rational lags on average price received by farmers for calves and the ratio of fed beef to corn prices at Omaha constitute the primary explanatory variables. The equations perform exceedingly well over the sample period ( 1950–80) and in post‐sample forecasts with the sample truncated back to 1970.

摘要:
AbstractEfforts to expand the economic base in nonmetropolitan communities traditionally focus on manufacturing. The case for a nonmanufacturing focus is presented in this paper, and survey data used to determine the actual basic role of these industries in nonmetropolitan communities. Community and firm characteristics are examined by regression analysis to determine factors associated with higher export levels. While only a minority of the nonmanufacturing businesses surveyed were export oriented, these were strongly so. Larger size, nonlocal ownership, and larger nonmetropolitan markets are associated with higher export levels but nearness to a metropolitan market is not.

摘要:
AbstractSeveral quality factors are important in valuing rough rice. This paper first evaluates the ability of federal grades to explain these factors. Second, the discounts associated with various quality factors are estimated. Finally, the factors affecting acceptance of a bid are investigated. The results indicate grades are useful but inadequate in explaining observed quality differentials. The major quality factor in determining price was head yield. Stinkbug damage was the most important quality factor of those that producers could control. The probability of acceptance increased with higher than expected bids, smaller lot sizes, more bidders, and as the marketing season progressed.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper examines the effect of heterogenous expectations about the future among potential farmland buyers. It is optimal for each seller to have a reservation price in excess of the value he attaches to the future stream of income attributable to owning the land if he thinks that some potential buyers may be more optimistic than he. A formula for the optimal reservation price is presented, and a numerical illustration is shown. An extremely preliminary empirical test using Corn Belt and Lake State data is made of the importance of optimists in determining land prices for 1968–81.

摘要:
AbstractThe productivity of graduate agricultural economics programs in the United States is measured by the number of pages and articles that recent graduates have published in theAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economicsduring the last ten years. In both rankings the University of California, Berkeley, leads, followed by the University of California, Davis, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan State or Purdue. When pages are divided by the number of graduates, the University of Chicago ranks first, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Berkeley, Davis, and Rhode Island.
