摘要:
AbstractCommon flexible functional forms are not very useful for modeling mixed demand systems because derivation of mixed demands requires closed forms for both direct and indirect utility functions. In this paper we study the alternative of using a direct approximation to mixed demands. We develop a new approach to Slutsky relations for mixed demand functions allowing formulation of a Rotterdam mixed demand model. The resulting mixed demand system is illustrated with an application to meat demand in Canada.

摘要:
AbstractThis article uses household survey data from Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda to test if the indigenous land rights systems in sub‐Saharan Africa are a constraint on agricultural productivity. Rights which farmers hold over individual parcels of land vary widely, and are in many cases surprisingly privatized. Yet with few exceptions, land rights are not found to be a significant factor in determining investments in land improvements, use of inputs, access to credit, or the productivity of land. These results cast doubt on the need for ambitious land registration and titling programs at this time.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper develops and tests a dynamic, stochastic model of seasonal labor demand of farm households in a developing country. Seasonality in agriculture is modeled as a dynamic two stage process (planting and harvesting) with sequential dependence of decisions. Yield risk is an important determinant of behavior in the planting stage only. The proposed model is estimated using plot‐specific cross‐section time‐series data from India. Consistent estimates of the male and female labor demand functions in the planting and harvesting stages are obtained by panel data econometric methods that control for the nonseparability of the model.

摘要:
AbstractA multi‐market model of technological change in food production is used to simulate the long‐run income distributional implications of differential diffusion of currently available wheat technologies in Pakistan. The results indicate that a research agenda emphasizing technologies suited to Pakistan's favored production environments would enhance overall production without compromising inter‐group equity. It is found that when commodity prices are market determined, net consuming households are the major beneficiaries of technological change. However, in the more common situation of government intervention in markets for staple foods, net producing households are the principal beneficiaries of technological change.

摘要:
AbstractA simple procedure is proposed for evaluating producer welfare under price uncertainty. The method is derived under the assumption of constant absolute risk aversion in which risk preferences depend on the stock of wealth but not on the flow of income. Numerical examples corroborate the procedure's properties.

摘要:
AbstractLine integral theory is used to prove that in a closed economy the net domestic social welfare effects of a market distortion can be captured in the distorted market alone by using equilibrium supply and demand curves. Considerable confusion exists in the applied literature about the proper application of this proposition. It is shown that the proposition does not generally hold for open economies. It is shown that in general neither geometric areas behind equilibrium supply curves nor geometric areas behind equilibrium demand curves have any welfare significance.

摘要:
AbstractMany problems in the economics of renewable resources can be put in the form of a dynamic planar system. This paper provides analytic and graphical methods for the study of the global dynamics, existence of stationary points, and local stability properties of such systems, and applies these methods to problems of (1) population and environmental quality; (2) exploitation of a stock of fish; and (3) the economics of the pleistocene extinctions and the origins of agriculture.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper investigates the implications of sustainability and survival strategies for economic analysis. It reviews connections between the approaches used by economists and biological scientists in the study of survival. The paper emphasizes the role of irreversibility and uncertainty in the investigation of sustainability issues. Implications of the results for the analysis of economic behavior are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThe trip/visit variable in the individual travel cost method is often regarded as discrete. Furthermore, it is often reported in surveys as a grouped variable (the number of visits reported falling into one of several classes). This paper develops a travel cost model which takes account of discreteness and grouping in both demand and benefit estimation. A case study and associated simulations are then reported which indicate the potential extent of bias that may arise from ignoring discreteness/grouping in demand and benefit estimation. The information loss involved in varying the size of visit classes is also examined.

摘要:
AbstractApplied economic research often involves testing between nonnested models. In such situations informal criteria are often used in preference to readily available testing procedures. This article deals with regression‐based tests between nonnested models, showing the development of theJ‐ andJA‐tests from the Cox principle. Testing between linear and log‐linear models is discussed as an example of how tests can be constructed when the dependent variables of competing models have a monotonic functional relationship. An empirical example is given to illustrate the procedures.
