摘要:
AbstractEstimates of extreme winds are essential for engineering design, but in preparing such estimates major statistical issues are encountered. In this case study, the analysts were provided with hourly readings on wind speed, wind direction, and barometric pressure at five Canadian stations for observation periods ranging over several recent decades. Their assignment was to calculate point and interval estimates of 10‐, 20‐, 50‐, and 100‐year return values (i.e., upper fractiles) for the wind speeds at these s

摘要:
AbstractUnbalanced‐size samples arise naturally in equal‐employment cases, as the minority fraction of all employees or applicants are invariably less than one half. Motivated by an actual case in which the median test with no power to detect disparate treatment was accepted in court, we develop a symmetrized form of the control median test having the same asymptotic properties as the median test. Since the actual case concerned the relative merits of the median and Wilcoxon test, a Monte Carlo study of the power of the new test and other nonparametric tests is reported. The results show that the new procedure is more powerful than the ordinary median test in small unbalanced samples. When the data come from a normal or double‐exponential law, the Wilcoxon test is however usually superior to either of the others. When the data come from a Cauchy distribution, on the other hand, the powers of the procedures typically are rev

摘要:
AbstractThe use of maximum‐likelihood estimation as discussed by Sprott and Viveros (1984) is extended to include the logFdistribution to accommodate skewness. The role played by linear pivotals in relation to likelihood and efficiency is discussed. Normal,t, and logFlikelihoods are defined and used to generate possible normal,t, and logFlinear pivotal quantities. The results are applied to the location‐scale family, where exact results are available to assess the numerical accuracy of the proposed procedure. Refinements using saddlepoint approximations are obtai

摘要:
AbstractAnscombe's formulation of the problem of comparing two treatments in a medical trial is modified to incorporate truncation prior to the horizon size as a possible practical constraint. Optimal designs are determined, and their Bayes properties are compared with several natural competitors. It is suggested that the question of what are the relevant criteria for designing a medical trial in a given context deserves more attention than appears generally to have been the case.

摘要:
AbstractThe comparison ofnestedlinear models with normal error is well standardized in the common procedures of the analysis of variance. This article considers the comparison of twonon‐nestedlinear models that have the same parameter dimension; the comparison is made on the assumption that the true mean lies somewhere in the linear span of the two models. The analysis leads to a precision‐based conditional confidence interval for the unsigned angular direction of the true mean, and this in turn provides a confidence assessment of the two directions that correspond to the two models being compared. The confidence interval is an approximate conditional interval (given the distance of the estimate from the intersection of the hypotheses), and its length as a fraction of π indicates the precision of the confidence procedure. The method provides a conditional‐inference alternative to a confidence interval available by Creasy‐Fieller

摘要:
AbstractWe study the behavior of the tail probabilities of weighted averages of certain independently and identically distributed random variables as the weights are varied. We show that the upper and lower tails are smallest when all the weights are equal. Our results apply to exponential, chi‐squared, gamma, and Weibull random variable
