The growth of S. aureus CHP is inhibit-ed by 5 µg/ml diethylstilbestrol but not by high con-centrations of progesterone, testosterone, or estradiol. On the other hand, pretreatment of S. aureus cells with testosterone or progesterone, but not with estra-diol or diethylstilbestrol, accelerates their subsequent lysis by lysozyme or trypsin. The structural basis for these actions can be seen in the electron micrographs, which show the cell walls weakened and distorted by testosterone and progesterone. Diethylstilbestrol, which blocks nafcillin-enhanced lysis, must inhibit cell growth through some as yet un-revealed intracellular mechanism

Anthramycin Methyl Ether (AME) was injected subcutaneously (0.5, 1.0, 2.5 or 6.0 mg/kg into Ha/ICR mice, and jejunal segments were re- moved at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 or 48 h after injection. Histological sections and crypt squashes showed the number of mitotic figures/crypt to be reduced to 50–70 % of control values in 1 h with all doses of the drug. The highest dose reduced the number of mitotic figures to near 0 in 12 h. The nadir seen with the lower doses was also found at 12 h, but dose dependent repair was observed, and was essentially complete by 36 h, as indicated by near normal mitotic figures/crypt. Crypt necrosis was seen to occur with all doses 3 h after injection. Crypt degeneration from the high dose was extreme by 6 h and the crypts were completely obliterated by 12 h after injection. The low dose produced crypt necrosis which was maximum at 6 h, while at 12 h, repair had begun and at 24 h, recovery was nearly complete. The temporal course of DNA synthesis after subcutaneous injection on Anthramycin Methyl Ether (AME) was investigated in Sarcoma-180 ascites tumor cells and in the proliferative cells of the intestinal epithelium. Both cell types demonstrated dramatic inhibition of DNA synthesis: however, there was no appreciable difference in response of the 2 cell systems to the drug. After sub-lethal doses, recovery was seen to occur in an oscillatory fashion which eventually reached control values. This pattern of recovery suggested partial in vivo synchronization of the proliferative cell population, which could be due to preferential block in one stage of cell cycle or selective killing of cells in a sensitive stage.

One hundred fifteen strains of Diplo-coccus pneumoniae were randomly isolated from septic lesions not associated with the respiratory tract, and sputum, throat and nose in 16 centers throughout Poland. All strains were typed and 92.2 % of them proved typable. Most frequently occurring types were: 19, 6B, 23, 6A, 17, 18C, 7, 14 and 35 listed here in order of frequency; these types constituted 51.3 % of typable strains. Together 40 serological types were found among the 115 strains. Investigation of susceptibility of these strains to 30 antibiotics, revealed very high sensitivity to the penicillins, cephaloridine and rifamycins, as well as to lincomycin, pristinamycin, novobiocin and tyrothricin. Sixteen strains (14 %) were tetracycline-resistant, one strain was erythromycin- and spiramycin-resistant, 3 oleandomycin-resistant and 9 chlor-amphenicol-resistant. All resistant strains were type 23, 19, 6A, 6B and 14, two first types occurring most frequently. Fucidin, bacitracin, streptomycin and the neomycin group of antibiotics were not effective.

We studied the interpretation of the disc method in the determination of the sensitivity of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to penicillin G, ampicillin and doxycycline. The disc sensitivities corresponding to each minimal inhibitory concentration overlapped to the extent that they could not be used to predict MIC. Cross-resistance was found between penicillin G, ampicillin and methicillin. We frequently observed simultaneous resistance to penicillinand doxycycline.

Cephalexin was given to 27 patients with urinary tract infections. Sterilization of the urine after completion of the course of treatment was obtained in 65.5 % of cases. Two months later at least 23 % of the patients treated remained cured. Tolerance of the drug was satisfactory. Important side effects of drug administration were reported in 3 patients (10 %) and minor symptoms, possibly related to the intake of the drug in another two. Although a daily dose of 1 g of cephalexin per day may be sufficient in most cases of urinary tract infections, a regimen of 2 g/ day may offer a desirable margin of safety, without added discomfort. From the experience obtained in the present study, and our previous experience in bronchopul-monary infections, cephalexin appears to be a valuable antibiotic, easy to administer.
