SummaryThis paper tries to define and clarify the issue of loss of control as part of the nature of alcoholism. It defines what it really is, when and how it operates most significantly and also clarifies its relationship to alcoholism. As a necessary preface there is a clarification of the concept alcoholism itself. The taper concludes with a discussion on the new focus that this approach permits on the possibilities of prevention.

SummaryOne chronic male alcoholic was used in an experimental designed to investigate the feasibility of using the free operant technique, in a restricted laboratory setting, as a means of analyzing the behavior patterns of an alcoholic. Further, the variability of the reinforcing value of beverage alcohol was investigated under Fixed Ratio and Fixed Interval schedules of reinforcement. The subject was run for 192 consecutive hours under both non‐drinking and drinking conditions. Operant and temporal data on response rate and beverage alcohol consumption were collected Whisky as a reinforcer with an alcoholic generated response behavior under fixed ratio and fixed interval schedules similar to the performance found in infrahuman subjects and in retarded and non‐retarded children. SummaryOne hundred young people aged 15 to 25 years were seen in the walk‐in psychiatric emergency stroke of the Massachusetts General Hospital. Eighty‐three had used alcohol and 58 had used drugs on at least six separate occasions. In most cases the use of these substances seemed incidental to the clinical presentation. However, serious abuse of drugs or alcohol was linked with a history of other behavioral disturbances such as delinquent acts, school drop‐out and work instability. These behavioral abnormalities were usually apparent from an early age.This study indicates that certain individuals run a substantially higher risk than others of becoming heavily involved with drugs and alcohol. Established drug and alcohol dependence present formidable treatment problems. An emphasis on early prevention—by reaching these high risk individuals while they art still at school—may help to reduce the incidence of these disorders among

SummaryThis study was undertaken mainly to examine the attitudes heroin addicts hold towards themselves in their addiction; and to compare the addicts' responses with those of the professional and paraprofessional staff who work with them. We consider that the attitudes of the staff play a significant role in treatment, and that treatment becomes more effective when patients and staff agree closely about the cause and nature of the illness. Conversely, a marked divergence in views could seriously impede treatment.The second aim of this study was to compare the way addicts viewed themselves and their illness and the way they viewed alcoholics and alcoholism. We feel that there are many similarities between these major addictive stales even though in most centers they art treated separately.

SummaryA report on 50 adolescent drug abusers seen in Dublin is presented. 84 per cent were male and 80 per cent mere Irish. Their school achievement was poor and 62 per cent displayed frequent mitching in their last school year. This occurred prior to the onset of drug taking. Their work records were also unsatisfactory, jobs being changed frequently while 60 per cent were unemployed for more than one year of an average working life of four years. In 40 per cent of the families one of the parents, usually the father, was dead or absent. The family size was larger than the national average while in 70 per cent, one of the members was using drugs in the course of legitimate treatment or illegally. The majority of the sample began using drugs in their post school‐leasing year. Cannabis and LSD were the two drugs most commonly used. 48 per cent had used drugs intravenously. 46 per cent had used drugs for more than three years.
