SummaryWhether based on production, tax or sales statistics, estimates of alcohol consumption are subject to bias arising from record keeping procedures and from unrecorded consumption. Based on an analysis of the accuracy of consumption estimates derived from sales statistics in Ontario, two significant biases are identified. The first problem concerns the use of 16 per cent as the conversion factor for wine. As the consumption of 12 per cent table wines has increased, this figure is no longer appropriate and results in an over estimation of total alcohol consumption by about 2 per cent. The second major problem is the unrecorded home production of wine and wine brandy, which results in an underestimation of consumption by about 6 to 7 per cent. The available evidence concerning other types of unrecorded production indicates that they are not significant. SummaryA test battery consisting of the Beck Depression Inventory, Zung Self‐Rating Depression Scale, Rathus Assertiveness Schedule, and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory was administered to newly admitted alcoholic patients receiving pharmacological aversion treatment at a private facility. The results found 42 per cent of these patients to be clinically depressed. This depressed group was also significantly more depressed than relapsed patients readmitted for further treatment. The depressed group appeared qualitatively different in being younger and in reporting significantly more psycho‐pathology on the MMPI. In addition, significant sex differences appeared in that women reported more psychopathology and less overall social skill than their male counterparts. SummaryThe issue of whether alcoholics can become moderate drinkers has recently been debated on empirical and ideological grounds. The present study compared residentially treated alcoholics who subsequently abstained with those who became moderate drinkers.Data were analysed separately for two groups of patients: 262 patients who were low in socio‐economic status and related variables and who had been discharged from one of three programmes ‐ Salvation Army, public hospital‐based setting, or a half‐way house that functioned as a therapeutic community; and 167 patients who were relatively high in socio‐economic status and related variables and who had been treated at either an aversion conditioning programme or a milieu oriented programme. Three sets of variables were studied: socio‐demographic and pre‐morbid psycho‐social and drinking factors; post‐hospital treatment experiences; and post‐hospital psycho‐social and drinking factors.Six to eight months after discharge, 22 per cent of ‘low‐bottom’ alcoholics and 29 per cent of ‘high‐bottom’ alcoholics were drinking moderately; 15 per cent of ‘low‐bottom’ alcoholics and 46 per cent of ‘high‐bottom’ alcoholics were abstinent. Few predictive or concurrent differences between abstaining and moderate drinking alcoholics were found. SummarySixty‐three alcohol‐discordant male twin pairs, aged 45–65 years, have been investigated with respect to psycho‐social conditions, psychiatric symptoms and use of psychotropic drugs. The low consumers were significantly more often found to be married and to remain married in their first marriage, to have children and to have a higher education than their high consuming co‐twins. No differences were obtained as regards employment, income, living standard or criminality. A significantly larger number of the high consumers had been convicted for being drunk. As far as political and social activities are concerned the high alcohol consumers showed less interest and activity than their low‐consuming co‐twins. No evident disparities were found with respect to psychiatric symptoms and use of psychotropic drugs but a significantly larger number of the high consumers had seen a physician because of nervousness.
