摘要:
AbstractAlthough Adolf Meyer, first director of the Phipps Clinic at John Hopkins, did much to promote a knowledge of psychoanalysis in the United States, he never identified his views with those of Freud. Using unpublished letters and documents, the present paper seeks to clarify Meyer's attitude towards psychoanalysis by focusing on his dealings with one of Freud's most gifted followers, Ernest Jones, at a critical moment in the reception of psychoanalysis in America. In particular, an effort is made to identify some of the personal, intellectual, and institutional factors that shaped Meyer's response to Freud.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper has two related goals. First, it seeks to show that the theory of perception found in William James'sPrinciples of Psychologyis thoroughly consistent if it is approached through the framework of perceptual realism versus constructionism rather than the nativism versus empiricism debate. As such, this paper offers an alternative to Nicholas Pastore's claim that there are two contradictory theories of perception in thePrinciples.James's commitment to perceptual realism is articulated within the contexts of his (1) critique of constructionist perception theories, (2) notion of the spatialquale, and (3) formulation of the role of knowledge in adult perception. The second goal of this paper deals with the historical development of James's perceptual realism. Here it is argued that Shadworth Hodgson's method of reflection–an anticipation of Husserl's phenomenological reduction–served as the basis of James's commitment to perceptual real

摘要:
AbstractThere remains a good deal of confusion concerning the respective roles legal realism and sociological jurisprudence played in the movement to demythologize the study of law in the United States. It is asserted that this confusion is the result of a failure to recognize that American legal realism was part of the intellectual tradition of the thennew behavioral sciences–in particular, adopting as its methodological premise the ideal of a divorce between the study of fact and value. In contrast, sociological jurisprudence under the influence of Roscoe Pound, relied upon the tradition of pragmatic philosophy, ultimately denying that the realist's separation was either possible or desirable. As such, American legal realism should be seen as the true precursor of more modern attempts to engage in the study of judicial behavioralism and to attempt more scientific studies of the judicial proces

摘要:
AbstractAmerican laboratory biologists showed considerable interest in the study of invertebrate behavior in the period 1890–1910. The most important controversy was that between Jacques Loeb and H. S. Jennings regarding the nature of animal tropisms. Loeb advocated a dynamic approach that would lead to control of behavior, while Jennings argued for structural‐mechanical explanations designed to account for evolutionary adaptation. Jennings's criticism of Loeb's tropism theory was a Pyrrhic victory in that it led American biologists to lose interest in invertebrate behavior. The paper concludes by considering the relative impact of Leob's and Jennings's research programs on the work of John B. Wat
