摘要:
AbstractThis is a story about the New Psychologists who strove at the turn of the century to institutionalize a new science and to create a new set of professional roles. More particularly, it is about the rhetorical fabric they wove around the nascent science of psychology. The article focuses, one by one, on different strands of this fabric – on (1) what persuaded the first generation of American psychologists to take an interest in the New Psychology; (2) the arguments these aspiring psychologists presented to presidents and trustees to insure that they could pursue their interest within particular institutional settings; (3) the arguments they put forth against the rights of other persons to engage in similar, competing pursuits; (4) the arguments they laid before various administrators, officials, interest groups, and the general public to guarantee continued and even increased support; and (5) the arguments they presented in the form of theories and practices developed between approximately 1880 and 1920. In this way, it attempts to construct a likely story about the establishment of the New Psychology in America

摘要:
AbstractThe geography section of the Class of Moral and Political Sciences of the French National Institute, which was in existence from December 1795 to January 1803, responded inadequately to the theoretical challenges of Montesquieu, the hygienists, Volney, and Degérando to study thoroughly native peoples to determine the effects of physical geographic conditions on the body and mind. Most geographers had no interest in human geography, and even statistical geography received only superficial discussion. Despite the emergence of the scientific journal, only a few authors partly transcended the stereotypes of the noble‐ignoble savage. The only expedition partly planned by the Institute in this period had an ambitious exploration program that precluded a linguistically sophisticated study of native peoples. Bonaparte's dissolution of the Class hindered further opportunities for studying human geography during the Empi

摘要:
AbstractIn June 1962 the South African Psychological Association lost a substantial number of its members when a rival psychological association was formed. The events that culminated in this split within the ranks of South African psychologists are described. It is argued that the division occurred over the question of whether blacks should be allowed as members of the organization, thus making the South African race issue and the feasibility of apartheid as a sociopolitical solution to the country's racial problem the major factor in the split. The division also had consequences for universities and research organizations, as it overlapped with the major ethnolinguistic divisions in the country.

摘要:
AbstractHenri Hubert developed early Durkheimian critiques of racial sciences such as an throposociology from his perspective as an archeologist, historian, and ethnographer of primitive European religions. His major works on the “primitive” Celts and Germans continue these critiques of racism. But Hubert also engaged in the political mythologizing of French national identity by trading in the republican myth of “celt
