摘要:
AbstractThis article (based on published writings of the researchers plus unpublished data and reports in recently opened archives) examines why Alfred Binet's concept of multifaceted intelligence requiring lengthy and varied testing continued and flourished in the 1920s and 1930s in the laboratories of Henri Pieron, Henri Laugier and other French psychologists and psychotechnicians. While the Americans and British evolved theories and practices of intelligence measurement reducible to a single number, most French psychologists used a much more subtle and complex understanding of the phenomenon. This hindered mass applications of intelligence tests which did not occur in France until the end of the Second World War. The Terman version of Binet's test did not re‐enter France until 195

摘要:
AbstractCharles Merriam has been characteristically treated, in historical accounts of American political science, as effecting a radical break with the nineteenth‐century tradition and with the historicism that characterized the Columbia school from which he emerged. Although it would be a mistake to depreciate his contribution to subsequent political science, we misunderstand both Merriam and the contemporary discipline if we project images of the present on his work and fail to see the degree to which he embraced both the form and content of the study of politics initiated by his teachers William Dunning and John Burges

摘要:
AbstractAt the beginning of the 1940s the Social Science Research Council's Committee on the Appraisal of Research, then chaired by Ernest Burgess, commissioned a restudy of the cases and methods used by Robert Angell in his well‐known book The Family Encounters the Depression.1The restudy involved prominent sociologists. Burgess provided a draft report, but no final report appeared. The interest in and subsequent disappearance of the final report invites investigation. This paper summarizes the history and content of the draft report, and examines its meaning in the context of the methodology of the period. The nature and fate of the report reflect conflicting methodological tendencies at the tim

摘要:
AbstractGémez Pereira published a book in 1554 in which he proposed the thesis of animal automatism. This work included proofs of animal insensitivity and a mechanistic model of animal behavior. This model explained animal behavior, before Descartes, on the basis of purely mechanical systems. Pereira's work represents a critical appraisal of the traditional scholastic theory of the animal mind, as well as one of the first efforts to develop a model of animal behavior based on empirical observation and physiological knowledge
