摘要:
Fibromyalgia is a chronic medical condition characterized by widespread body pain and uncontrollable fatigue. It is often accompanied by many other problems such as irritable bowel, headaches, sleep disorder, and poor circulation. Diagnostic criteria including tender point locations and various other symptoms are provided to aid in recognizing fibromyalgia. Treatment options including the latest drug therapies and self-help therapies should assist the health care provider in treating the fibromyalgia patient. The clinician and the patient must work closely together to identify the combination of treatment options and medications that are most beneficial to each patient. Patient education is crucial since patients who understand their medical condition will be better able to manage their symptoms. Through further research and education, an improved quality of life for patients with fibromyalgia and their families can be attained.

摘要:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, is a condition that afflicts many women during their childbearing years. It is one of the leading causes of female infertility. Symptoms of PCOS are related to androgen excess and are not associated with estrogen deficiency. Classic symptoms include amenorrhea, hirsutism, acne, and obesity. Management of PCOS is directed by the client's concerns regarding symptoms, desire for pregnancy, and degree of morbidity related to androgen excess. First-line management of PCOS includes diet modification, weight loss, and stress management. First-line treatment for androgen excess is estrogen therapy, the combination of estrogen and progesterone being the drugs of choice. Uncomplicated amenorrhea in PCOS is managed with monthly or bimonthly administration of medroxyprogesterone. The antie-strogen clomiphene citrate has been the drug of choice for inducing ovulation. The success of any treatment plan will depend largely on the client's ability to reduce body weight.

摘要:
Reye's syndrome (RS) is a biphasic illness that occurs predominately in children and adolescents. A prodromal viral illness (frequently influenza A or B or chicken pox) is followed by protracted vomiting and neurologic changes that start 3 to 5 days later, just when the child seems to be recovering. Aspirin has been identified as one factor contributing to the metabolic disorder that occurs. Since 1986 the FDA has required labels on all aspirin products warning about the association of aspirin use and RS. Media messages heightened public awareness regarding the alternatives to aspirin for analgesia and antipyretic use. Since 1988, the incidence of RS has decreased dramatically. RS is now more prevalent in older adolescents who may self-medicate. Because early recognition of the disease is associated with decreased morbidity and mortality, it is important for health care providers to recognize the symptoms of RS. Unexpected vomiting and disturbed brain functioning following a viral illness are symptoms of RS in children and adolescents. In infants, the symptoms of RS may be more subtle, including diarrhea, respiratory disturbances, and seizures.

摘要:
The purpose of this article is to provide the clinician with practical information to promote the healthy sexuality of one's clients. Much of the current literature related to sexuality is problem-focused; this article focuses on sexuality from a health promotion viewpoint. The development of sexuality is discussed from early through older adulthood, and a set of guidelines for use In the clinical setting is presented. Health care providers are often reluctant to initiate a discussion with a client relating to sexuality. However, in order to follow a holistic approach to health promotion, sexuality must be addressed by the clinician. These guidelines will provide the information needed for initiating a discussion about sexuality with adults.
